Reviewing the Literature Addressing Cardiovascular Disparities in the LGBTQ Community Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., with social drivers of health significantly influencing outcomes. For the LGBTQ community, which makes up about 7.1% of the U.S. population, the burden of CVD is disproportionately high compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. Unique health risks and a lack of comprehensive research contribute to these disparities. Efforts to understand and mitigate these issues are crucial. The American Heart Association has taken steps to outline research gaps and provide frameworks for enhancing LGBTQ cardiovascular health equity. This focus on specialized care and research is vital in tackling the physiological impacts of minority stress and improving health outcomes for LGBTQ individuals across the nation. As healthcare professionals, we must advocate for and implement strategies that address these disparities, ensuring equitable healthcare access and treatment for all. I help health professionals learn about Transgender and Non-binary health through training and technical assistance to reduce health disparities and maximize health potential.
Are you creating health campaigns for Transgender and Non-Binary communities? We just completed a couple of focus groups in AZ. Here is some of the feedback we got from folks who participated: 🏳️⚧️ Health messages have to be created collaboratively with the community and include representation of Trans and Non-Binary people. 🏳️⚧️ Health messages should be strengths-based, focusing on bodily autonomy, community-building, and linking to additional resources. 🏳️⚧️ Health messages must be available across multiple media and should treat health holistically. 🏳️⚧️ Fear-based, risk-focused, and condescending health messages are not effective. And most importantly, a health campaign is only as effective as the actual resources in our community. When people are directed to environments where they experience transphobia, racism, fatphobia, ableism, etc., then they are not likely to access that resource or return to follow-up. This is why focusing on health equity for gender-diverse communities through staff training, policy revision, and community-based engagement is so necessary to reduce health disparities. This has lit another fire in my belly, and I’m starting to book organizations for training and technical assistance in January-March 2024. Put #me in the comments below if you want your organization to be an affirming resource for gender-diverse people! #LGBTHealthcare #TransHealth #QueerHealth #InclusiveCare #LGBTWellness #EqualityInHealthcare #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQInclusion #transgender #nonbinary #health #wellness #healthcare #publichealth #sexualhealth #training #resources
