The Culture Map by Erin Meyer 📚 Just finished reading the first book in my #SummerStack, "The Culture Map" as part of Frankfurt International School's commitment to equity, justice, and belonging. It's been one of the most insightful and engaging books I've read in a long time! Erin addresses early on that some may worry her work perpetuates stereotypes, but she emphasizes that understanding the scales she uses and their interpretation is crucial. Rather than sharing my key takeaways, I wanted to share a few snapshots that got me thinking: 1. "Many well-intentioned people don't educate themselves about cultural differences, believing that focusing on individual differences is enough." 2. "...when considering the impact of cultural differences, what matters is not absolute positioning on a scale but rather their relative positioning in comparison to you." 3. "Taking extra time to discuss communication upfront can avoid painful and costly faux pas." 4. "Investing time in a relationship-based approach pays dividends when working with people from around the world." 5. "A few words of explanation framing your behavior can make a difference in how your actions are perceived." And my favorite quote: "Our own cultural conditioning seems so obvious that we can't imagine others might do things differently. Only by identifying what's typical in our culture but different from others can we open a dialogue of sharing, learning, and understanding."
