Today we celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Food is an invaluable commodity, yet almost a third of the food produced for human consumption is wasted across the supply chain. Packaging helps tackle food waste through lengthened shelf-life and thus also helps minimize food waste related greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. Only 5 percent of carbon emissions in food systems are attributable to food packaging, and the environmental benefit of avoided waste is up to 5 to 10 times higher than the environmental cost of the packaging. Does #foodwaste legislation really make an impact? 🤔 It looks that way in California. According to a recent Axios article and ReFED data, California has seen a 10% decline in food waste following state regulations for businesses and households. With food waste contributing to about 10% of global emissions, progress like this means a lot. Like California, many other states have announced or begun to implement food waste legislation. If we see results like this in more states across the country, we may have a chance to drastically reduce the amount of food waste our country produces. Can the words we use assist in changing our mindset? How do you feel when we use words like "rotting" "waste" "problem" ? They are all negative words that conjure unsightly imagery. Consider changing the words we use and adjust the conversation from a negative, to one we can get behind to make a positive difference. In the US, 40% of all food is wasted, while 1 in 8 U.S. households lack consistent access to food. Although many orgs are already taking strides to address this challenge, a massive acceleration is needed to reach the national goal of cutting food waste 50% by 2030. That’s why our circular food insecurity reusables concept, A Circular Future (www.acircularfuture.com) is a co-signatory on a letter to Congress asking them to prioritize food loss and waste in the upcoming Farm Bill. This package of legislation, passed every five years, has tremendous impacts on our food systems—meaning it's an incredible opportunity to promote long-lasting solutions to the food waste crisis. Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste! Reducing food waste is a shared responsibility. Actors at all levels need to be involved: governments, farmers and food businesses, non-governmental organizations, research and academic institutions and consumers.   At Corbion we are preserving food safety, shelf life, texture, and nutritional benefits with our food solutions.
