Today we celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Food is an invaluable commodity, yet almost a third of the food produced for human consumption is wasted across the supply chain. Packaging helps tackle food waste through lengthened shelf-life and thus also helps minimize food waste related greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. Only 5 percent of carbon emissions in food systems are attributable to food packaging, and the environmental benefit of avoided waste is up to 5 to 10 times higher than the environmental cost of the packaging. Does #foodwaste legislation really make an impact? ๐ค It looks that way in California. According to a recent Axios article and ReFED data, California has seen a 10% decline in food waste following state regulations for businesses and households. With food waste contributing to about 10% of global emissions, progress like this means a lot. Like California, many other states have announced or begun to implement food waste legislation. If we see results like this in more states across the country, we may have a chance to drastically reduce the amount of food waste our country produces. If your company needs help figuring out how to comply with current or impending food waste regulations, reach out to our team and learn about how the Food Waste Solutions we offer can help: https://lnkd.in/ergcY4He https://lnkd.in/ghvrK5wH

Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste! Reducing food waste is a shared responsibility. Actors at all levels need to be involved: governments, farmers and food businesses, non-governmental organizations, research and academic institutions and consumers. ย At Corbion we are preserving food safety, shelf life, texture, and nutritional benefits with our food solutions. For example, over 20% of the meat produced annually is lost or wasted. Corbion's solutions for processed meat extend shelf life and keep food safer, which can help cut waste. Reducing global meat waste by 25% would prevent 170 million tons of CO2 emissions โ the equivalent of taking 33 million cars off the road.
