Uncovering our biases and embracing cultural diversity involves introspection and a readiness to question our assumptions. Acknowledging that biases are a part of us, shaped by our upbringing and experiences, allows us to actively strive for a more inclusive mindset. Forming connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds is pivotal in dismantling biases. This can be achieved through community involvement, volunteering, and participation in cultural exchange programs. Immersing ourselves in different cultures provides firsthand experiences that challenge our perspectives, enriching our lives and strengthening the bonds that unite us as a global community. Our monthly team breakfasts are back! 💪 If there’s one thing we have learned, especially in an environment of so much change, it is the importance of repetition. Repetition of the organisational “why” and inspiring the daily expression of the culture we want to live as a team. From the meeting room to the lunch table, how each team member interacts in the seen or unseen, that is how we shape the culture of our organization. Breakfasts are where we welcome, we reconnect, we think together and re-commit to our LP values ✨ Yesterday we talked about our value of community 🤍 Community- "Our brand is love." Sometimes it is that simple. We believe in the power of loving people until they feel they belong. It is subtle yet transformational and we know it! So we say hello, we're curious and we ask questions, we extend invitations and we're intentional in building friendships. Is that how we change the world? How do you support neurodiverse staff in your workplace? As it’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week I've been reflecting on how, within the team I manage at Tameside Council, we acknowledge and appreciate the unique strengths and abilities of each individual. When a colleague reveals they are neurodivergent, it's crucial to approach the conversation with openness and honesty. We start by understanding their skill set, preferred communication style, and support needs for peak performance each day. I'll admit, I wasn’t initially sure how best to support them when I hired my first neurodiverse team member. But it's okay to acknowledge uncertainties and be open to learning. Supporting neurodiversity isn't about getting it right the first time; it's about ongoing dialogue and adaptation. Through collaborating with neurodiverse colleagues, I've gained invaluable insights. Our team culture now values diverse approaches to work. Personally, I've reconsidered how I engage with all team members, applying adjustments where needed. Providing support shouldn't feel like a burden—it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive. At Tameside Council, we're fortunate to have ample support and resources. Let's continue championing neurodiversity and fostering an inclusive workplace together!
