“My youngest [child] had asked if I would become the CEO of Greggs when Roger left, and I said no. My kids all looked at me completely horrified. My daughter said to me: ‘Mum, you’ve always said that when a door opens, you’ve got to be brave and take the opportunity!’ When the role came up, their words were ringing in my ears." I love this quote from the recent article about Greggs and their CEO Roisin Currie. 😊 After 19 years with Asda in senior HR roles, Currie joined Greggs as Group People Director in 2010. Roger Whiteside, the then CEO handed her an expanded role in 2017, giving her responsibility for the chain’s outlets. She added property to her remit in 2021 and was appointed CEO in 2022. I love to see progression like this. It's a high-profile role and it would have been very attractive to external candidates. The chairman responsible for her appointment said “She’s a team player with little regard for ego and played a great role promoting those values at Greggs." Last year pre-tax profits came in at £188.3 million on sales of £1.8 billion. A long-standing bonus scheme means workers with more than six months’ service share 10 per cent of those profits. 😊 Curious if there are other HR professionals turned CEO's like Roisin. Primark is an Irish-based chain known for its strategic brilliance and low-cost corporate culture. The parent company of Primark is Associated British Foods, a $25 billion public company with operations in 55 countries. Primark has been expanding in the U.S. market since 2015 and currently has 27 stores, with plans to reach 60 by 2026. The company follows a fast-fashion model with a focus on everyday low prices and no advertising or marketing gimmicks. Primark offers a wide range of products at very affordable prices, including licensed goods from popular properties like Disney and Marvel. While Primark has sustainability initiatives, it faces criticism for its disposable product model. Despite having fewer stores compared to major retailers, Primark's expansion plans and strategic approach make it a serious player in the specialty store space. European retailers that have successfully entered the U.S. market started slowly and ramped up expansion, which is a strategy Primark seems to be following. INDUSTRY NETWORKING: People Who Changed My Life   By Mike Todaro, AAPN Managing Director Who have you met that changed your life, your career, even your very being? I met my list at AAPN events. For example:   Lynsey Jones is a proven industry icon. With a Bachelors and Masters in Textiles from the NC State Wilson College of Textiles , she truly “walked the walk” all the way up to a C-Suite apparel industry executive. Like so many at the top of our industry, Lynsey began her career at Abercrombie, then spent over 10 years at VF, Crop. including opening and running their Americas sourcing office in Panama.    She spent five years at Carter’s as a vice president, including running their Hong Kong sourcing officer of over two years. When she returned to Atlanta, she had five departments reporting to her.   Once Sue Strickland and I realized that Lynsey was “the one,” the right person for us to transition the AAPN to for the future, we got to work – together. Yet, it all started when we first met, shown in the bottom photo, in Miami at our 2013 Annual Conference. Lynsey is sitting with Tom Nelson of VF corp.   THE CHANGE? You know when you know. At first blush, Lynsey was tough, strong, fast and focused – a natural C-Suite, big picture exec. This is the most embarrasing way to learn something 😅 At primark we have weekly meetings with our line managers in our departments. We walk around, like a client will, and we take decisions for the next week’s planning. 🗓 As we were discussing possible action plans for boosting our sales I noticed a really ugly hanging polo. And I told him: "I bet we don’t sell many of these, who wears this kind of product?" He laughed, and said to me: “I do, you should take a look at the figures” It was one of our best sellers. 🪙 After I got over the embarrasment and the shock that maybe I do not dress as well as I thought... I realized he gave me two important lessons: ✔️ I can’t let my personal taste affect the commercial decisions I take. ✔️ If I want to sell something, I have to look at what the market demands, not what I personally like I didn't expect to learn something this way, but it has been effective, I'm sure I won't forget it.
