Rethinking the Disability Symbol: Is it Time for a Change? I’ve been reading a bit about The International Symbol of Access (ISA) thanks to Lyndal Stewart, who leads our Access ERG. The ISA is the familiar wheelchair figure, but it has created a bit of a debate. While widely recognised, some argue it excludes the vast spectrum of disabilities. Proponents of change advocate for a symbol that better reflects the diversity of the disability community, encompassing those with invisible disabilities or those who use walkers or canes. Opponents argue the current symbol is clear and established, and the cost of replacing signage could be significant. They also highlight the challenge of creating a single icon that represents every type of disability. This conversation highlights the ongoing need for inclusivity in a world where we like to ‘symbolise’ everything. Could a new symbol, or perhaps a set of symbols, better represent the disability experience? I think back to the evolution of the Pride flag. While there are numerous reiterations based on diverse expereinces, the rainbow's colours on a flag are synonymous with Pride and the LGBTTQIA (rainbow) communities. Is there an equivalent path of evolution for the ISA? #disabilityinclusion #accessibility #diversity #isa #diversity https://lnkd.in/dxeKvVfn https://lnkd.in/dET6JKym
