What Is Food Insecurity? 🤔 Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. People facing food insecurity often have to make difficult choices with limited resources, like buying medicine, paying a utility bill, or buying food. These economic stresses can contribute to emotional stress and further complicate family stability. HOPE worldwide HQ staff ended 2023 volunteering with Atlanta Community Food Bank, the central hub in the fight against hunger in Atlanta and North Georgia. ACFB works with more than 700 nonprofit partners to distribute over 8 million meals across metro Atlanta and North Georgia each month, relying on volunteers every day for various essential tasks. Nearly half of our budget (47%) goes toward grocery store and cafeteria vouchers for teammates experiencing food insecurity. In addition to the Teammate Success Coaching Program, Advocate Health teams address food insecurity by collaborating with community service groups and faith partners. According to the 2022 Advocate Health MW Community Health Impact Report, since 2018, more than 30,000 families were served over 1.3 million pounds of fresh healthy food through signature programs including mobile pantries, food pharmacies, hospital-based pantries, pop-up markets and donations of fresh produce from local community gardens at hospital sites. An important part of #TMSC is making teammates aware of these helpful programs and resources. 📣 We Need Your Input! 📣 Our founder and CEO, Joi Chevalier recently presented to the Travis County Public Health Commission, sharing the impactful success and future needs of our Supplemental Emergency Food Access Network (SEFAN). Since the pandemic began, SEFAN has delivered tangible results in Travis County through our Cultura Cuisine for Population Health solution, providing prepared meals that address specific community health and food access needs. The majority of the participants have difficulty accessing healthy food due to income, disability, or health issues. The participants of this program are Travis County residents with household incomes at or below 200% FPL. Participants reported feeling that they improved access to healthy and nutritious food due to the program. “The SEFAN program has been an essential and extremely successful tool for Travis County. Not only does it meet people’s immediate need for prepared food, but it connects them with staff who help them with other essential needs like housing or transportation or health care. This program provides them with delicious, healthy food and the tools to transform their lives.” – BRIGID SHEA, TRAVIS COUNTY COMMISSIONER. SEFAN’s impact has been tremendous. In the last 18 months, we delivered 309,870 meals to 8,253 people in need, partnering with 30 community-based organizations across 51 distribution sites. Joi’s presentation underscored our need for continued funding to sustain and expand this essential work and deepen our impact within the community. My goal this season is to make a meaningful impact on food insecurity. Will you join me? I beieve that together we can nourish the greatness and potential that exists in everyone, one plate, one neighbor at a time. 🍽️ While we’re preparing for the season and gathering for celebrations, 1.2 million of our NYC neighbors may not know where their next meal is coming from. And only 1 in 4 of our food insecure neighbors can access the help available. 💔 That is unacceptable. Period. Daniel Zauderer and his team at Grassroots Grocery shows us an innovative way to actually change these disturbing stats. As a community, WE can extend the food supply chain the last mile to reach 2500 households each week!! 🤝🥒🥦🍎🤝 Grassroots Grocery’s network of neighbors helping neighbors takes excess, wholesale bulk produce from Hunts Point Produce Market directly into the heart of the surrounding communities to those who need it most. Thats what I call farm to table for all!! ❤️ How? 5 days a week, Team GrG & volunteers like me pack and deliver beautiful fresh produce (which might otherwise go to waste) to courageous community leaders who host neighborhood produce giveaways = dignified, hyper-local access to healthy food. Since its founding in 1979, GCFD has been a pivotal force in distributing food to pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other programs, addressing both immediate food needs and the root causes of food insecurity. Here's an overview of GCFD's key strategies and impact: - Innovative Partnerships: Collaborates with local farmers, grocery stores, and food manufacturers to rescue and distribute surplus food. - Community Programs: Operates mobile food pantries, soup kitchens, and nutrition education initiatives to reach those most in need. - Advocacy and Education: Advocates for policies to address hunger’s root causes and educates families on nutrition and food budgeting. - Workforce Development: Offers job training programs to help individuals gain skills in the foodservice industry.
