Anyone who has been in a school setting has seen this dynamic play out. The consequences of disciplinary problems are significant, affecting students' school experience, learning opportunities, and future outcomes. Unfortunately, students of color bear a disproportionate burden. The photo was taken from the article "A Vicious Cycle: A Social–Psychological Account of Extreme Racial Disparities in School Discipline". The authors explain how bias and fear of bias can create a harmful cycle in schools damaging teacher-student relationships and worsening inequality. #RestorativeJustice #HealingJustice #TransformativeJustice #RestorativePractices #RestorativeCommunity #RepairingHarm #Reconciliation #ConflictResolution #RestorativeApproach #RestorativeCircle #RestorativeProcesses #ReparativeJustice #AccountabilityMatters #Education #EducationReform #Classroom #PositiveSchoolCulture #SchoolDisciplineDisparities #RacialInequalityInSchools #DisciplinaryBias #BreakingTheCycle #StudentExperiencesMatter #DismantlingDiscrimination #FosteringTeacherStudentRelationships

Disproportionality in school discipline is an heartbreakingly enduring problem. Every school and district should have programs and policies in place to review their data and begin to dismantle this legacy of harm to students. #students #principals #schoolleaders

As an adjunct professor, I have so many questions… 1-I don’t understand how those given the privilege of educating young adults can abuse that power. 2- Do faculty members who “stand” with anti-Israel and anti-semetic students have #tenure ? Is that why they feel they can spew such hate? 3- OR…do they NOT have tenure and maybe think if they “jump on the bandwagon” it might help them get it? 4- Finally, higher education has always been about preparing for life in the “real world”… promoting discourse and problem-solving- #whathappened? I welcome all thoughts

Poor School Quality Is No Longer a Funding Problem. Public-school apologists need a new excuse for the terrible results of many American schools. Perhaps the biggest lie in American education is that schools serving rich kids spend more than those serving the poor. Where suburban districts bask in shiny textbooks and Astroturf, urban districts suffer crumbling foundations and teacher-bought school supplies. That’s the consensus among “progressives” in statehouses and think tanks alike. But with a handful of exceptions, they’re simply... https://lnkd.in/eRcDDvcr

Educators report being threatened and attacked by students and, in some cases, their parents. Elsewhere, they worry about censorship. The Washintong Post writes that, across the country, teachers are reporting to their unions and principals what they describe as a list of accruing traumas from their classrooms. From disruptions to hallway melees to pushy parents to anxieties around censorship and the increasingly political nature of their jobs, many educators say they are starting this school year on edge. #education #teachers #schools #teaching #classroom https://lnkd.in/dgRSVFTV

Here are the facts: 80% of teachers and administration in the United States are White and are in positions that make decisions that directly impact the education of Black and Brown students. Students of color make up 51% of the public school demographic, yet score the lowest on reading and comprehension tests, have less access to resources than their counterparts, and have the highest illiteracy rate. It is evident that the need for more Black and POC educators is imperative. The need for culturally responsive training is essential to closing the gaps that turn illiterate children into literate adults. The cycle ends here and now! #CulturallyResponsiveTraining #ProfessionalDevelopment #BreakTheCycle #ElementaryEducationEvolved #BlackStudents #WhiteTeachers #Education #EducationMatters

It's that time of year when college applications are in full swing, and our seniors (alongside us, their parents) are busy deciding which schools to apply to. But as a mother, there's something very important we need to discuss. While most students (including my eldest just last year) can apply to most any college without a care in the world, our Jewish students are facing a very different reality. Sadly, college campuses have become a breeding ground for anti-Semitism, with division and hate spreading from the classrooms to every corner of the campus. From the lecterns to the quads. This is affecting the choices and application process of Jewish seniors, including my own son, this year. My biggest fear has always been a hazing gone wrong or something like I’ve seen way too many times on 20/20 but never did I consider antisemitism and certainly not to the degrees I’m seeing today. We need colleges to create an environment that is welcoming, safe and respectful to students of all faiths. So that we, as parents can send them off on their independent futures with a little less worry in their heads and a lot less fear in our hearts. Isn’t the letting go part hard enough without all the added hate du jour? #CollegeApplicationSeason #SupportOurJewishStudents #NoMoreHateOnCampus #UnitedAgainstAntiSemitism #EducationWithoutDiscrimination #jewishEducationWithoutDiscrimination
