Out of a job? Get CLEAR about What You Want First! Contrary to popular belief, one of the first things to do when looking for a new opportunity is to resist the temptation of applying to every job in every industry. The problem with going after every job out of desperation is that there is no way you can invest sufficient energy and effort to be truly ready if you’re not focused. Instead, by taking the time to define what is most important to you and developing your job search goals, you significantly increase the likelihood of finding a position that truly matches your needs and aspirations. #careergoals #careergoal #jobsearch #jobsearchstrategies #jobsearchtips #jobsearchgoal #jobsearchgoals

During a recent meeting with a potential coachee, we discussed how long it typically takes to find a new job. The coachee, a mother whose child just started school, suddenly had more time to focus on her career and was eager to advance. She asked me, "How long does it take to find a new job?" I responded, "Realistically, it typically takes about 3-4 months." She was taken aback by this, surprised that the process could be so lengthy. I explained, "Yes, there are instances where people land a new job within 2 weeks. However, in most cases, these are individuals who have accepted the first offer the market has given them. Occasionally, you get lucky and what the market offers aligns perfectly with what you're looking for. "But wouldn't you rather be in a position where you have at least a couple of options and can select what best suits you? That's possible if you invest time to understand the market and your direction." I broke it down into phases: 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 1 - 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 2 - 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 3 - 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 More on each of these phases in the next post, tomorrow. #careercoaching #jobs #jobseekers

Are you thinking of looking for a new job? Before you go job hunting, have a chat with your manager. Please don't wait until you're handing in your notice to tell them why you're off. You don't need to yell out that you're job searching. Just let them know that you're mulling over your next career move. Share your career goals, what matters to you, and what you're looking for before looking elsewhere. You may find their response pleasantly surprising. If they value your contributions and your position within the company, they may be able to offer what you're after. Be bold about asking about timings. If they're discussing career progression, find out when it could happen. This shows them you're keen and gives you a deadline. If they're in the dark about your job satisfaction or ambitions, they can't help, can they? Some managers will say they can't offer more career growth or a pay rise because of reasons beyond their control. That's fair enough. At least then, you know where you stand and can decide if sticking around aligns with your career goals. But, if you've been given empty promises or they're dragging their heels, then it's time to start looking. Being upfront with your current employer saves you time. You never know; the perfect role might be waiting for you right where you are. #humanresources #hr #management

It’s ok to feel conflicted about making a career choice. A couple of weeks ago, I had a client land a shiny, attractive offer for a C-suite-level role. It checked many of the boxes they wanted in their search, but it wasn’t exactly the target they were aiming for. They were in a tricky position: decide to take the offer or wait it out to find the exact thing. This is a position I actually see many of my clients run into. They are smart, successful, ambitious business professionals, with a strong track record behind them and companies want them. But, no one is immune to the emotional drain and inner critic that pops up during a job search (especially during a market like this). And, turning down an attractive (or very attractive) offer to wait it out can feel incredibly challenging, especially if you’re eager to end your job search for one reason or another. Sometimes my clients decide to take the offer and put a roadmap in place to keep moving the target forward in a slow-roll job search over the next several months. Sometimes my clients decide to wait it out for the exact thing because they have the luxury to, know it’s truly what they want, and believe the wait will be worth it. Either way, it doesn’t make the decision process any easier. There is no right or wrong when it comes to career decisions, at the end of the day, you have to make the best decision for right now to the best of your ability. Whatever decision you choose will provide more clarity that you can take into your next decision. If you’re in the midst of a career decision point or about to launch a job search and want some support, reach out. I have 2 spots left on my roster for March and I’d love to see how I can support you in your career journey. #Careers #Jobsearch #CareerTransition #PersonalDevelopment
