Another great PCH Annual Conference last week at Whittlebury Park with over 140 teammates attending. The conference was opened by video with Powell Brown, CEO of Brown & Brown, congratulating everyone on a record 2023 and setting the scene for 2024 and beyond. Culture litmus test. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting a team that has their North Star dialed, and it was clear they were all singing from the same sheet music; mission, culture, vision, etc. It was super impressive and I’m confident they will continue to find massive success. There were several gems I learned from them, but this one really stood out: “The best test of your culture is what you think your team members are telling their family about your company”… Pause and think about that for a min. That’s a fantastic perspective, especially in a world where work / life integration has been magnified by WFH. IMHO company culture is ever evolving, can turn on a dime, and likely never perfect for firms that obsess about it. They recognize that good is the enemy of great, and a powerful adversary. There is always work to be done on this front, beyond pizza parties and trips to Top Golf. So why would someone proudly say “we have an awesome culture”, and sit frustrated at the dinner table? I’ve noticed in recent years an increase in the use of the words culture, core values, vision and client experience. They have always been critically important to winning, but they seem to be more fashionable to talk about post pandemic (potentially another biproduct of the WFH conversation across corporate America). I’ve also noticed over the years that many leaders can’t tell you what they are when put on the spot. These things are tied together. A deficiency in one of them impacts the rest, especially culture. If you walk down the hall today and ask someone what the vision or core values are and get the deer in the headlights look, would the CEO agree that “we have a great culture?” I’ve gotten off the rails here a bit, point is, companies can proudly exclaim “we have a great culture”, but if you think team members are singing a different tune at home, and culture is indeed an important priority, then there are likely blind spots that need to be exposed and addressed. P. BRIJLALL After a workplace accident, WSIB put me through hell and made my injuries twice as worse permanently then robbed me of my benefits just because of the colour of my skin. Sandra Di Carlo the case manager took me out from physio therapy that was helping me with my recovery and sent me to wsib Doctor and physio therapy that made my injuries twice as worse permanently. Deb Remekie, The lady at WSIB that robbed me of my benefit, she said that I can sell jewelry, she thinks because I am black I can steal jewelry and sell, so she decided to rob me of my benefit. And it's not a joke she said it verbally and in writing. And believed it or not the APPEALS TRIBUNAL agreed with her without a doubt or any question Atal. The Tribunal did not look at my file, apparently they don't even care to look at my file. The WSIB is an independent organization that operates at arm’s length from the ministry and oversees the administration of workplace safety and insurance benefits and services. As a result, the Minister and ministry staff cannot comment on or get involved in individual cases.
Since 1974, CHEO has been a pillar of the Ottawa community. Their team has grown remarkably since then, providing education and research and supporting more than 500,000 patients each year. Last week, I had the chance to celebrate these 50 years of service and thank the incredible staff for all their work.
