I am thankful to work 7p-7a shift caring for patients on First Floor Medical. We have such a great team of smart, compassionate nurses, aides and secretaries. I appreciate a culture that has led to a SIXTH consecutive Magnet Designation. I applaud efforts at all levels to find creative ways to overcome obstacles. Recognizing that all hospitals - including my own- have great challenges ahead, I want to share my "Grown Up Christmas List" for 2023 and the years ahead. 1-Ask nurses "on the ground" in direct patient care what we need and include us in finding solutions. 2-Make time to listen well. 3- Share resources that will help us think outside the box and to work with Leaders to innovate, and reduce redundancy in cumbersome documentation (which is pulling us away from time with patients and exhausting us). 4- Prioritize Nursing in Epic/IT to do lists. 5- Make sure we have the supplies and systems we need to work smarter. 6- Notice and speak up with appreciation when we go above and beyond (day after day) to give patients great care despite the challenges. 7- Write a note so we can reread when we are weary - put a copy in our evaluation folder. 8- Decrease the time it takes to hire strong candidates before they take jobs elsewhere. 9- Recognize loyalty and excellence with pay that is best our system can offer. 10- Promote a non-punitive Just Culture that recognizes broken systems and staffing realities and the impact on our practice and nurses well being.

💚National Medical Assistants Day 💚 The profession of medical assisting has evolved over time to meet the growing needs of healthcare. It all started back in the early 20th century when doctors realized they needed assistance with administrative tasks and patient care. They began training individuals to perform both clinical and administrative duties, thus giving birth to the role of medical assistants. In the beginning, medical assistants were mainly responsible for tasks such as taking patient histories, scheduling appointments, and keeping medical records organized. As the field progressed, they started taking on more clinical responsibilities like taking vital signs, assisting with minor procedures, and collecting laboratory specimens. Throughout the years, the role of medical assistants has continued to expand and become more diverse. Today, they play a vital role in healthcare settings, working alongside doctors and nurses to provide quality care to patients. They assist in various areas, including patient intake, performing basic lab tests, administering medications, and even giving injections. The profession of medical assisting has seen tremendous growth and recognition, with many individuals choosing it as a rewarding and fulfilling career path. It’s impressive how this profession has adapted to meet the changing needs of healthcare and continues to be an essential part of the healthcare team. Let us take a moment to honor and appreciate the incredible dedication and hard work of all Medical Assistants, including our own MA’s, who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care for both us and our patients. 💚 www.wc-health.com #healthcare #medicine #medical #doctor #nurse #doctors #wellness #healthy #mentalhealth #nurses #nevada #lasvegas #reno #healthcareheros #nursing #mentalhealthmatters #suicideawareness #painmanegement

I help healthcare leaders manage the demands and the complexity of their roles so they can feel hopeful and excited about the work they do.
Career Stories 5️⃣ 🩺 I remember sitting in the clinic and thinking "This is what I want to do" 🚑 I'd been a ward sister in the CCU for 3 years, I was learning loads and ready for the next thing (a theme in my career). Rapid Access Chest Pain clinics (RACPC) were becoming established across the country and I knew this was for me. 🩺 If you recall back in my first role chest pain assessment had been a thing then and over the years I'd honed my skills and experience and this was what I wanted to do. 🩺 So when the role of Chest Pain Nurse Practitioner came up I was there. Exposed to a whole new world, I loved it. The learning, the opportunities, seeing the world from the medical point of view.....all incredible and I was in my element. I couldn't get enough. 📝 I had by this time completed a cardiology course and listening some great educational advice - I didn't finish my nursing degree (I still don't have one) and I gained a place on the Cardiology Masters course run by the post-graduate medical school. I thrived in this environment. With an MSc completed (like that was an easy thing (not)). I then moved straight to the nurse prescribing course. 💊 🩺 I was so fortunate, remain grateful and am ever in debt to the number of doctors I worked with at this time. They gave me their time, knowledge, understanding, trust and friendship. Ever since that time, I have believed that if we all can bring our strengths and perspectives together we can make anything happen. 🚑 I don't think nurses or nursing need to separate themselves to prove their value. I think our medical colleagues respect and know that value and we need to stand together to achieve what is needed. I know I do my best work in a team of all those skills, backgrounds and experiences. 💡 We come together for a purpose and can achieve great things when left to fly. #healthcare #leadership #nursing

#Nursing’s profile: has a negative impact on how they are treated and compensated. 🫥 Many view nurses as compassionate medical professionals who simply administer medications, transfer patients, and communicate with doctors for updates. 💡However, what remains hidden is the complexity of thoughts within a nurse's mind. 🧠 After years of specialisation nurses become bona fide experts in their respective domains. The level of skill, knowledge, intuition, and recollection required to excel as a skilled nurse would surprise many. The renowned "nurse’s intuition" is a result of years spent studying, learning, and experiencing the multifaceted challenges of healthcare—culminating in the ability to identify nuances that may not be evident in laboratory tests or imaging. 🩻 The overly simplistic perception of nurses makes it convenient for healthcare leaders to justify lower pay or higher patient volumes. It is time for the image of nurses to undergo a transformation so that they are rightfully recognized as the accomplished, versatile, hands-on scientists they truly are. #Question is - What #Next ? Should Specialist Groups - use their platforms and voice: and recognise the very important work Nurses Do ? 🗣️🤝🎤
