WANTED: CREATIVE DOCUMENTERS - help us tell our 10 year story
The Creative Black Country team are looking for talented creative documenters (this includes, photographers, filmmakers, designers, animators and illustrators) to help tell our story in 2024 and 2025.
We want to use engaging short-form videos to tell some of the stories that we often hear but don’t always get to capture. It’s important for us to share the difference a project has had in for instance; building a person’s confidence; or how a project has helped shape someone’s future. How a project has brought together a small community of people with shared interests; or has helped up-skill them in some way.
If you think you have the skills and network to help we’d LOVE to hear from you. All the details are at the link >

Since the year 2020 I have always been a photographer. I graduated from a phone camera to owning a digital camera. I have always loved photography and quality pictures. I am known for this skill.
Suddenly, a number of people approached me and wanted me to render a video-editing service to them. I kept reminding them in case they forgot that I’m only a photographer and I’m not interested in video editing. I added that I don’t have the patience to edit videos.
Honestly, I wasn’t interested in video editing because I’ve seen really cool videos and I thought I won’t be able to do something close prior to the fact that I have little knowledge of the complexities that come with video editing.
As life will have it, I got to a position in school where I was required to edit videos and I couldn’t turn it down since that was part of my duty in that position.
I didn’t know how to go about it but I started editing on #capcut . Trust me, my first trial was a mess but I kept doing it.
Took lessons on Youtube. Watched and observed different transitions from those who are good at it.
Voila! I successfully fell in love with video editing. I didn’t see this coming too.
I can stay awake all through the night just to finish up a particular video editing project. I have gotten a number of comments on my work and I can’t wait to explore this field deeper.
Now, what I didn’t add to my story is;
# It takes an open mind to like a skill, especially when you don’t have a choice.
# It takes consistency to be a pro at anything.
# You don’t need a 1 million worth class with 20 gifts to be good at a skill.
# You also don’t need to attend all the online classes on a skill to be good at it.
# One or two with an ocean of consistency and discipline will do the trick.
# Join a community of people in your skill of interest.
# Connect with the pros and keep an open mind.
# Observe and ask questions.
# Your first trial can make you cower but ignore the feeling and keep getting better.
# Improve your taste by watching others.
I hope this will encourage someone who feels he/she can never learn a skill due to its complexities.

How to film and edit a commercial (my commercial for Barts Choir below):
1. Pre-production: Depending on the client you're working for, research for some inspiration, write down ideas, create a mood-board/storyboard and make a shot-list.
2. Equipment: What kind of equipment will allow you to achieve the end product? What lenses or lighting set up will allow you to capture the shots you have planned? If you don't own a certain tool, you can always hire equipment and it'll always be a worthy investment because it'll mean that your client will be happy with your ability to capture the vision they had in mind.
3. Be Prepared: Even if you've used your equipment 100 times in the past, if you're not 100% sure of something the night before a shoot, test it out. If you remember that your gimbal wasn't running as smoothly as it usually does in your last shoot, watch tutorials about how best to calibrate it and what settings you might be overlooking.
4. Innovate: Don't be afraid to try something new in the edit, even if it takes longer than usual. If you think some animation and graphics would enhance a certain video, why not? Of course sometimes deadlines are against you, so being an efficient editor is essential. But when you have an idea with the current clips at your disposal, be creative and meticulous, because when it works, your client will know that you're willing to go above and beyond, prompting them to come back to you for the next shoot.
