Happy TEN YEARS, #MomConnect! We're celebrating a decade of #MomConnect - the groundbreaking multi-partner initiative revolutionising maternal and child health in South Africa. For over ten years, this multistakeholder partnership led by Department of Health South Africa and Reach Digital Health has transformed the lives of millions of mothers and children in South Africa. Launched in 2013, MomConnect is a free mobile health information service that provides vital health information and support to pregnant women and new mothers via SMS and WhatsApp. The power of #MomConnect has resulted in: ✅ Increased attendance at prenatal care visits ✅ Improved vaccination rates for babies ✅ Increased breastfeeding rates ✅ Increased family planning use #MomConnect goes beyond providing health information. It is also a platform for sharing experiences and getting help during an emotional and critical time for mothers. Keith Mangam, our head of MERL, is at the International AIDS Society 25th International AIDS Conference. These are his key takeaways from the sessions and engagements that he has participated in; > People-centred approaches: The resounding call to "put people first" echoed throughout the conference. It's clear that successful interventions for vulnerable populations must prioritise their voices and needs at every stage. This means involving communities in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs to ensure they are truly relevant, accessible, and equitable. > The Final Push Towards 95-95-95: While significant progress has been made towards the 95-95-95 goals, innovative approaches are essential to reach those left behind. AI emerges as a potential game-changer, particularly in enhancing identification efforts and medication adherence support. However, ethical considerations surrounding AI use and data protection are paramount and must be addressed diligently. > Cost-Effectiveness and Digital Health: Cost-effectiveness is crucial in the face of declining international funding. Digital health innovations integrated with AI present opportunities to achieve efficiency gains and scale interventions beyond traditional models. Collaboration between technology partners and service delivery experts is vital to identify bottlenecks and leverage digital solutions for maximum impact. While challenges remain, #IAS2024 renewed Reach Digital Health's commitment to ending the HIV epidemic and building a healthier, more equitable world for all. Carlos Yerena will participate in a panel discussion on "Harnessing the Power of Digital Technologies for Global Health in West Africa" at the RSTMH Regional Meeting on July 30th in Lagos, Nigeria. The meeting, hosted by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, will focus on the region's critical health and tropical medicine challenges.
