This week in my #COMM231 class we continued our talk on creativity and talked more in depth about the strategic approach. We talked about the different approaches companies can take to either touch on the emotional side of their consumer or the cognitive side. In this commercial I found on the car company Volvo they use an emotion strategy talking about how women get injured in car crashes more than men because male test dummies are the standard. Ever wondered why it's called "Bluetooth"? The story begins in 958 AD with the Viking king of Denmark... King Harald needed a dentist. His tooth died and turned blue. So his subjects started calling him "Blåtand"—King Bluetooth. Besides being known for his dental problems, Harald was great at unifying clans without going all "Viking smash" on them. He peacefully united much of Scandinavia. Fast forward 1000 years... 3 giant companies (Intel, Nokia, Ericsson) are each racing to develop a way for devices to communicate over short-range radio. But they realize, "We want all our devices to talk to each other. What if we join forces?" They codenamed the project "Bluetooth," after the Viking king who united warring clans. When the tech was ready to launch, the marketing department came up with AWESOME name ideas like "Personal Area Network." 🤮 They decided to stick with Bluetooth. (Hat tip to Jeremy Miller's book "Brand New Name" for introducing me to this story.)

On this day in 1946, the first-ever high-fidelity tape recording was demonstrated by Jack Mullin, an event that would forever change the landscape of audio technology. Leveraging a German-made AEG Magnetophon and enhancing it with advanced American electronics, Mullin was able to produce a sound so clear it seemed as if the performers were live in the room. This breakthrough quickly caught the attention of the tech team behind Bing Crosby’s radio show, leading to Mullin’s direct involvement in the creation of the Ampex Model 200A in 1947. This iconic machine played a crucial role in revolutionising the recording industry and was later recognised with a Technical Grammy Award. Mullin’s work is a prime example of how innovative thinking and technical expertise can transform an industry and continue to influence it decades later. This just may be the best example I have seen in applying scientific method to our everyday life and decision-making. Jim Lill's thought process and strategies demonstrated on his website (https://jimlillmusic.com), and in his many YouTube videos, puts many seasoned scientist and engineers I know to shame. Worth the watch even if you are not a #musician. And it gets even better on some of Jim's other videos where he dives into perception, human choice and behaviors, and the interaction between sounds and the brain. His data catalog of A-B tests across instrument attributes, electronics, and sounds under various conditions is impressive. #guitarplayer #scientificmethod #musicindustry
