It is always interesting to testify before government bodies, whether they be State legislative committees in Frankfort, Jackson, or Baton Rouge, or City Council meetings here in New Orleans. As many times as I have done this, it is still nerve-wracking, despite the fact that I know the issues inside and out. But the hard part is communicating the key points in an impactful and efficient way. I know that what I say is not always heard, but it is always relevant to the discussion now and importantly, in the future. What was it today? Instead of summarizing, I will just post this New Orleans Times-Picayune/Advocate article by Tony McAuley - https://lnkd.in/gDj2Xm2F The interesting thing about this issue is the intersection of neighborhood zoning issues with public health. It also brings up issues of what values do we as citizens of New Orleans want our city to represent. Are we going to educate ourselves about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke as the leading cause of smoking related cancer and chronic disease. Do we pull ourselves up from 49th in state health rankings, or do we promote business interest over all else, even our own health.

Americans, it's time to take control of our personal health. Our capitalist system may not have our best interests at heart. With a $35 billion industry for one drug, Statins, it's clear that money is driving the decisions being made about our food. It's time to question why Europe bans certain ingredients. We should consider the benefits of separating the food and drug administration . Poor diet leads to a plethora of medicines that generates more profits for who? Watch "What the Health" on Netflix to learn more. Let's prioritize our health and well-being. #health #wellness #foodindustry #pharmaceuticals #personalhealth #WhatTheHealth

Food does not just happen. We exist within a system comprised of multiple interconnected parts. Too often we conflate lack of access with lack of ability to purchase. Because of this conflation, when parts of a food system breakdown the only solution offered is distributing emergency food assistance. If this is the only tool we leverage for Black communities, we are missing (and shutting people out of) the gains of the food economy in their communities.
