Abu Dhabi will host one of the world's most advanced waste-to-energy facilities, a joint venture between Tadweer Group, Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), and a Japanese consortium. The plant, located in Al Bihouth area, will annually process 900,000 tonnes of waste, generating electricity for 50,000 homes and reducing carbon emissions by 1.1 million tonnes yearly. The project aligns with Tadweer's strategy to minimize landfill reliance and support the UAE's energy goals. Innovative initiatives like reverse vending machines (RVMs) and a mobile app encourage recycling, with plans to expand the RVM network and launch more Recyclable Materials Collection Centers (RMCCs). Who wants to invest in waste in the Middle East?  As wealthy hubs like Saudi Arabia and the UAE both expand infrastructure and diversify their economies towards innovative emerging technologies, now is a great time to be interested in sustainable developments in waste management technology. Saudi Arabia is building no less than 20 airports, while the UAE has numerous expansion and adaptation plans involved with its civic infrastructure as well. With the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan insisting on supporting new building projects in sustainable ways where possible, it is more than wise to consider who may land contracts to take care of details like trash and maintenance. One new way to monetize trash processing that's parallel to and supportive of known layers like recycling? That’s data collection. Companies like Renie are delivering that concept in a hands-on way, with collection points adapted to gather as much data as possible. Property developers, corporates and deal makers will be more than curious about prospects like this which will fit their technology into important niches in a much bigger technological picture. With the way things are building upwards and outwards, and the way business is changing in the Kingdom, we expect a lot of change driving to come from there. And the drive to encourage private Saudi citizens to invest (Mod5r) will mean more money flowing to the advantage of startups in the region dealing with problems both thrilling and mundane alike. Back in Dubai in less than three months to represent IFM Investors at McKinsey & Company's Global Infrastructure Initiative Summit. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick it off than a visit to the world’s largest waste to energy facility, Warsan Waste Management Company PSC (WWMC). The most inspiring fact is that the construction began in October 2020 and in July this year the facility will reach its full commercial operation of processing 1.9m tonnes of municipal waste per year to generate 215 MW of electricity for the city of Dubai.
