It is safe to say that the many many sustainability labels out there can be confusing! 🤔 In fact, in a study from 2018, 1/3 of Danes found it difficult to differentiate between independent and non-independent sustainability labels, for instance company labels not controlled by a third party. No wonder! With more and more focus on sustainability, we not only had to know official, independent sustainability labels from third parties but also new and increasingly inventive labels from mostly well-meaning companies. However, now that the Empowering Consumers directive has been adopted, it’s time to say goodbye to sustainability labels that aren’t based on a certification scheme or not established by public authorities.
