SHOW HOW IT WORKS IS BETTER THAN SAY THAT IT WORKS – TINY PRODUCT, GREAT IDEA IN DISPLAY The one thing that brick-and-mortar can do better than online stores, is the instant possibility to test the product. This feature can be brought even to the humblest products, like ballpoint pens. This picture is from a Spanish low-price chain, Alehop. They have nice displays in general, but this detail caught my eye. The pens are cheap, so I thought, probably they are lousy or not even work. The solution that the store has made is a paper strip in front of the shelf. The text says: “try me”. Well, I tried, the pen was excellent, so I bought few of them. Still working and used daily. This is a very simple idea but shows that this store understands that customers must be confirmed that the products work. The great attitude towards detail is that even this humble pen has been displayed in customer-friendly manner. Same attitude is visible in all product groups. We were pretty pumped this week when we heard the news that Booths, the supermarket chain, is ditching self-checkouts in favour of real people. Should other brands jump on this bandwagon? We're leaning towards a big yes! If you're going to bring in tech to make things smoother for customers, it better actually do that. But let's face it, most of us have some not-so-great stories about wrestling with self-checkout machines. What really caught our attention in this article is this gem of a comment: "Delighting customers with our warm northern welcome is part of our DNA, and we continue to invest in our people to ensure we remain true to that ethos."
