This year has seen a wave of festival cancellations, leaving organizers and attendees with a sense of déjà vu. While PennFest, with a daily capacity of 10,000 over 3 days, may not be Coachella, small festivals like these still have a significant impact on the local economy, the incomes of performers, and the livelihoods of the stagehands and technicians who work behind the scenes. The PennFest organizers have done a number of things right - lessons that all event producers can learn from: 1. They notified everyone early. With the event dates originally set for July 19-21, this gave artists, technicians, and local establishments like hotels and restaurants ample time to adjust their plans and pivot their marketing efforts. 2. The organizers chose to cancel rather than deliver a subpar experience. Their statement about "challenging trading conditions coupled with significantly increasing costs in a very challenging economic climate" making it "impossible to deliver the event to the standard our customers have become accustomed to" indicates a commitment to quality that will be appreciated by their regular attendees. 3. The decision to roll over tickets to the 2025 event is a smart move on two counts: it saves on refund costs, and it leaves the organizer with cash on hand to help with the cash flow needed to plan the 2025 event. This proactive approach will serve them well as they look to bounce back stronger than ever. So why am I such a fan of Placemaking Weeks? Where do I even begin? Firstly as the host city, it is a conference or festival that gives back - where a team of the best global placemakers convene to solve your city's top challenges. After my first Placemaking Week in Amsterdam 2017, my former boss Hamdan Majeed and I were so inspired, we at Thinkcity decided to have one in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia called #PlacemakerWeekASEAN2019. The post event ripples continues to this day resulting in the formation of PLACEMAKING Malaysia, a centre of excellence under the auspices of Malaysian Institute of Planners. Secondly, the people you meet there will enervate you with their collective passion of wanting to create better places... for better city living, for better mental wellbeing and subsequently for a healthier planet. The presence of the personal ego is very low and what you are awashed with as you mingle and connect is a high level of love. I know it all sounds hokey, but I have been to many conferences and not many were able to leave an imprint in my heart and my soul as a Placemaking Week. Oh and did I mention, they also throw the best closing parties. Ramon Marrades, no pressure for Strasbourg!!! Last but not least, the case studies and presentations, will blow your mind and leave you inspired with hope - that all is not lost and that the world we live in is not doomed. So if you can go to #PlacemakingWeekEurope I seriously urge you to. I will be there in spirit, cheering everyone on.
