𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 | 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 First, I MUST communicate how incredible the cast was for the radio stage play adaptation of It’s A Wonderful Life. The cast truly carried the audience into the story and touched each person’s heart through this heartwarming Christmas classic. As one of the pianist/composers for the production, I had a front row seat to this in-depth and intentional artistry. An aspect of film and theater has been on my mind a lot the past few years, and I continually inspect stories as I interact with them. Specifically, I have been considering how stories can be used as motivating and inspiring pieces of advocacy and promotion of important culture and health concepts. It’s A Wonderful Life is an excellent example of a cultural story that acts as an impactful and insightful medium for advocacy and community education. While I am sure there are many other insightful pieces to this story, two components stood out specifically to me: Social Capital and Housing Security. George’s dream was to be an architect—to build bridges and skyscrapers. What he ended up being was an architect of lives, building connections and livelihoods. In fact, the character of George was an architect of social capital, connecting with community members and connecting community members with the resources they needed to achieve healthy lives. Additionally, George Bailey was a mouthpiece for housing security: “To work and die in a home with a couple of decent rooms and a bath.” –George Bailey This statement was made in a frustrated conversation with a local tycoon who was taking over the town. In his statement, George shares a deep sentiment that rings true for more individuals than those in Bedford Falls. Housing security is a crucial aspect of quality health and the prevention of disease. With a closer look into the script, an even stronger argument could be made for using It’s A Wonderful Life as a story of advocacy for mental health and socioeconomic determinants of health. * CURRENTLY ON MATERNITY LEAVE * Engagement | Communications | Purpose | Coach | Virgin Start-Up Cohort | Named 100 Creative Leaders w/ a Social Heart: The Dots
Since The House of St Barnabas closed its doors I've been thinking a lot about why the sudden closure has caused such an emotional reaction. The House of St Barnabas was built on the power of collective vision, a united commitment to raise the consciousness of London at that time. We are talking 2012/13, London, especially Soho was a different beast. Creativity and culture was palpable, there was an energy of 'right now' not 'when'. What made it great at that time was the community, the people bound by possibility, by creation, by connection and by social awareness. The idea was simple. The community powerful. Without community what do we have? It led me to think about the last time I felt that same power, that same collective energy of community. You only have to read books such as Jon Alexander's Citizen or listen to Jon Berghoff and participate in his X Change programme to be assured the work is being done, there are people who are mobilising groups to make change and make a paradigm shift. The House is one of many membership spaces that have been forced to close their doors. The Birch, Blacks, the new Founder club for female CEOs...the list goes on. So, what is the new membership model? How do we create community without a space? How do you sustain mobilisation in the current climate? Ha! I wish I had the answers but I can't help keep coming back to it and feel that I won't rest until I have at least an answer, if not, the answer. Thoughts welcome! #community #membership #communityimpact #collectivehumanity #thepowerofconnection

Who are we? We’re a new campaign, set up by Co-operatives West Midlands, the local representative body for the co-operative movement. Around one billion people are members of co-operatives and mutuals worldwide, and we work together to empower people to take positive action. For this campaign, we’re bringing together a range of partner organisations to give residents in Birmingham the ability and resources to protect the community spaces and services they care about, and to avoid a ‘fire sale’ of these assets that will leave them worse off. Individuals can sign up at https://lnkd.in/ecXXMnf9 If you'd like to join us as a partner organisation, please email [email protected] #birmingham #brum #community #communities #assetsofvalue
