This initiative marks a significant milestone towards decarbonizing logistics by implementing hydrogen technology for heavy goods vehicles. After my recent post about Europe's largest green façade building to be located in #Düsseldorf, I was informed that the city is transitioning its bus fleet from diesel to battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Rheinbahn AG will soon be operating hydrogen fuel-cell buses. I hope they will use #greenhydrogen exclusively. Düsseldorf is not only recognised for its surplus in public finances but also for its consistent commitment to sustainability, design and culture. However, it’s not just Düsseldorf making these strides. A growing number of German cities are integrating hydrogen-fuelled buses into their public transport fleets, including Hamburg, Wuppertal, Aschaffenburg, Oldenburg, and Vestische, to name just a few. Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn Regio, the largest bus transport provider in Germany serving 470 million passengers annually, is also venturing into hydrogen-powered transport. They have plans to introduce an initial fleet of 60 hydrogen fuel-cell buses for Northern Germany, specifically in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, starting as early as the beginning of 2024. In the sector of hydrogen-propelled mobility, buses are steadily gaining traction, although the most significant benefits of hydrogen propulsion are currently seen in the long-distance heavy trucking sector. Panel session focusing on decarbonization: At our ShippingLab conference at DTU - Technical University of Denmark on August 30 we are pleased to host a panel session on what how biofuel fits into the fuel mix for shipping and what considerations must be made as shipowner in relation to present fuel mix and future possibilities. The panellists will have an open discussion about both the role of biofuel as part of the road to decarbonization of shipping, but also a discussion about other means to decarbonizing the industry. Unlocking the potential of combined rail-road transport for a sustainable and efficient freight system! 🚂🚚 Our recent research takes a deep dive into the intricacies of combined transport by assessing its regulatory, infrastructural, organizational, and technical aspects. A subset of 27 practical measures for improvement have been identified through a Delphi study and in combination with insights from research of the past decade, we've crafted a practice-oriented research agenda. Key aspects of the agenda include the assessment of sustainability policies, digital platforms, seamless cross-border traffic, human factor in transport, changing terminal roles and technological developments in rail transport. We have signed an agreement in principle with China Classification Society to strengthen our ties to the Chinese shipping market and support our operations in Asia. The AIP confirms that CCS has reviewed and verified the Silverstream® System’s design drawings and provides an independent class verification of its generic system design. Looking ahead, the companies will collaborate on project-specific engagements and approvals for the integration of the Silverstream® System on ships classed by CCS. In other relevant news, Silverstream has recently become one of the founding members of the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation Alliance (GSTIA), an initiative sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Transport, designed to accelerate green industrial projects within China. 🔋 Exciting News for Battery Innovation in Germany! 💡 The German Bundestag's budget committee has given the green light to an additional €600 million for the construction of Northvolt's cutting-edge battery factory in Heide. This convertible bond, underwritten by the federal government and distributed by KfW Bank, will provide vital support to the ambitious Northvolt Drei project. 🏭🔌 Northvolt's battery factory, slated to commence construction in 2025, is set to create 3,000 jobs and boast a production capacity of 60 GWh – enough to power one million electric vehicles. Notably, Northvolt plans to incorporate a battery recycling plant into the facility, further enhancing its sustainability efforts. 🌿♻️ The federal government's support, when combined with the EU's backing and the state of Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG's contribution, underscores Germany's commitment to fostering innovation and advancing the electric vehicle industry.
