The night vision system transforms nighttime driving, employing innovative technologies to enhance the driver's perception beyond the capabilities of conventional headlights. Since its introduction in 2000, the system has undergone significant advancements in resolution, image spectrum, refresh rate and response times.
In Porsche vehicles, the night vision system consists of the electronic control unit (ECU) for night vision and a special camera. The ECU processes the raw images from the camera and calculates the object
positions that are important for the driver's safety. It is integrated into the instrument cluster, the Modular Infotainment System (MIB), and the optional head-up display.
Safety functions include the detection of objects up to 160 m away or the activation of warnings. When detecting animals, a discreet marker light replaces the strong flashing light beam so as not to frighten
them. Challenges such as lens soiling in rainy weather are solved by a water cleaning function, and a heating coil prevents ice from forming on the camera lens in winter.
The driver can individually adjust the warning settings and activate/deactivate functions to ensure a personalized driving experience.
