PAY TV MARKETING: Most broadcasters and Pay TV operators use on-air marketing to promote content that's arriving in the next 60 days or less. One of the interesting characteristics of HBO in the US is the occasional promotion and teasing of content much further out. The promo here is teasing content arriving mid-January. We have also seen HBO in the US occasionally tease returning shows that are currently 'in production' and perhaps not due for 6 months or longer. This kind of promotional activity could certainly be helpful in reducing churn in groups with particular show loyalties and its a useful technique for reminding consumers about the relationship of specific show franchises with the core brand. This current HBO promo teases True Detective: Night Country - featuring Jodie Foster which won't premiere until January 14th 2024. Advertising is something that we've learned to accept and expect. It's even a critical feature of many streaming service subscription options, so whether you're tuning into cable, streaming, YouTube, or even social media -- there will be ads. If ads are inevitable, that means consumers will be tired of them, especially when they are repeated in a pod. To avoid this, you'd better create a strong ad that's catchy, interesting, and to the point. Liberty Mutual Insurance has done just that. Their Liberty jingle combined with their rather amusing mascot, LiMu Emu, has won a place in the hearts of many viewers. It checks off everything on the list and is incredibly memorable and almost iconic. Evoking nostalgia, it's 1970s-themed, as LiMu and his buddy Doug drive a Plymouth Duster. This nostalgia (in combination with creativity and quirkiness) is the perfect recipe to resonate with their target audience. Cordless viewing does not mean just on-demand content. In fact, more and more live-tv viewing is happening via streaming. Case in point: I just watched March Madness in at least 4 ways 1. On TV Via broadcast on CBS (not streaming) 2. Streaming on YouTube TV (which was retransmitting the CBS affiliate) 3. Streaming via DirecTV’s streaming app (also a retransmission of the local CBS affiliate) 4. Streaming on my phone via the March Madness app.
