Work As Imagined versus Work As Done I've been hearing this phrase a lot lately, but it isn't a new concept. Over thirty years ago this issue was being discussed by the Piper Alpha Inquiry. Lord Cullen remarked that: “The safety policies and procedures were in place: the practice was different” (Volume 1, page 3). Commemorating Piper Alpha: 36 years of learning and progress in offshore safety This month, as part of SHP’s editorial partnership with Fieldfisher’s Health & Safety team, Beth Thompson (Associate) and Krysteen Ormond (Solicitor) revisit the context and key learnings from the Piper Alpha disaster, underscoring the ongoing importance of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of workers across all industries. On 6 July, the offshore oil and gas industry will commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Piper Alpha tragedy. The catastrophic platform explosion, occurring 120 miles off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland, remains the deadliest incident in offshore history, claiming 167 lives and seriously injuring 61 survivors. The Piper Alpha disaster is recognised as a pivotal moment in offshore health and safety. The lessons drawn from the subsequent Cullen Inquiry have profoundly influenced safety practices and continue to influence the health and safety management systems of many organisations today. Piper Alpha: One tragic night Piper Alpha, originally designed solely for oil extraction in the northern North Sea, was later modified to handle gas extraction and export. Safety is always a top priority at TNP, and our Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) crews work diligently to uphold it. While we're now in autumn, we want to share the precautions our teams took during the dangerously hot summer months. This year, we saw record-breaking heat and one of the driest summers in history. With these extreme conditions, our 10 SUE crews, working around 10 hours daily, took extra precautions to ensure everyone remained safe while working. Every week, TNP's SUE team leaders conduct a safety meeting to discuss important topics. In scorching summer months, topics like hydration and the early warning signs of heat stroke were a particular focus. Field crews were encouraged to take breaks as often as necessary and always work in teams of two.
