Homelessness is a complex issue that affects millions of people across the world. While it can feel overwhelming, it's important to remember that every small action counts. One way to make a difference is by donating your time or resources to a local homeless shelter or organization. These organizations often rely heavily on volunteers and donations to provide essential services to those in need. If you're unsure where to start, consider doing some research online or reaching out to your local government or community center for recommendations. In addition to donating your time or resources, there are other ways to support the homeless community. For example, you could advocate for policy changes that address the root causes of homelessness, such as lack of affordable housing and mental health resources. It's also important to remember that homelessness can happen to anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. Rather than stigmatizing or blaming individuals for their situation, we should work towards creating a more compassionate and inclusive society that supports all members of our community.

Homelessness and disadvantage affect large numbers of people right across Western Sydney and it doesn’t discriminate. It is critical that we provide people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of homelessness with the support to rebuild their lives and reconnect with the community. It is also more important than ever that we prevent homelessness from occurring in the first place. There are more than 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness each night – an increase of five per cent since 2016. Alarmingly, approximately 43,000 of these are under the age of 35, and more than 17,000 children under the age of 12 don’t have a stable place to call home. Your support is vital in helping us provide essential care and programs to those in our community who need it the most. All funds raised from this event will go towards supporting four Vinnies Support Centres in Harris Park, Blacktown, Emerton and Penrith. These Support Centres provide assistance and support to those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This could be due to domestic/family violence; leaving prison; loss of employment; difficulty finding employment or due to the rising cost of living. Our Vinnies Support Centres provide clients with a range of financial support including: rent arrears, furniture and appliances, bonds, clothing and linen or other household goods to set up a home. There are almost 6,000 people experiencing homelessness from the Parramatta area to the Mountains. Please help us to help them.

2024 is a special year for Doorway – it’s 20 years since we first opened our doors in Chippenham in support of people experiencing homelessness. Anniversaries tend to lead to a bit of reflection: How was it back then? What do we do now that we didn’t do then? What’s changed? One thing that has changed is our name - in our earliest iteration we were the North Wilts Homelessness Project, and it wasn't until 2010 that we registered as an independent charity, Doorway Wiltshire. However, an anniversary is also a good opportunity to look at what has stayed the same. What has noticeably stayed the same is the set of values we operate by. We still do not judge, we still treat everyone as equals, and we still act from a base of dignity and respect. The individual nature of our support has also remained a vital part of what we do; Doorway has always listened to a person’s story and asked them what needs to happen to enable them to move on from homelessness. This piece recorded for BBC Wiltshire Radio just before Christmas says it all – one of our guests describes his recovery from rough sleeping, and talks of Doorway as ‘a community of people helping themselves and helping each other’. Although our service has expanded and the number of people experiencing homelessness in Wiltshire has increased over the years it’s reassuring to know that some things will never change. https://lnkd.in/eCXm46fZ

The average family in #MN can afford to pay $1,035 in rent without spending more than 30% of a household's income, according to Minnesota Housing Partnership's 2021 Out of Reach report. The same report noted the lowest income households in the state can afford just $704 per month for rent.
