The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) #LH2 pump has consistently and reliably achieved an excellent output of 160 kg/h at a discharge pressure of 90 MPa. MHI’s LH2 pump design also ensures that hydrogen loss due to boil-off is negligible, thus enhancing the economics of the hydrogen refueling stations. The pump’s performance is enabling MHI to rapidly integrate it into hydrogen refueling stations and bring the product to the California market in the immediate future. FirstElement Fuel, Inc. (FEF) operates a one-of-a-kind field-testing facility for hydrogen cryopumps at its Hydrogen Distribution Hub in Livermore, CA. The field-testing capability allows for multiple, long-run cycles of cryopump operations under real-world hydrogen conditions. MHI and FEF have worked closely together to test MHI’s LH2 pump because of their shared view that liquid hydrogen is required to achieve a full-scale hydrogen society and that liquid hydrogen cryopump technology will be critical to meeting the refueling needs of all hydrogen vehicle classes. #Hydrogen #cryopump

💡 Our latest research has revealed that by the end of 2023, there were 1,068 hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) in operation, in 35 countries. Of these countries, China had the largest number in commission with 359 stations. In Europe, Germany had the most HRS with 105 in operation. The USA had 76, with 66 of those in California. We estimate 6,080 stations to be in operation by 2030 (1,562 by 2025). The Asia-Pacific region will continue to lead construction (66%), followed by EMEA (27%) then the Americas (7%). Hydrogen on Tap. This is an interesting concept. Adding #hydrogen to the existing gas network, then extracting it where it's needed. Assuming hydrogen from excess #renewables is used, this can #decarbonise domestic/commercial heating and industries where #gas is used for process heating. Filling stations for #hydrogenfuelcell vehicles wouldn't need as many tube trailers delivered by HGV. There are many questions though. What would this do to the price of gas in the network? How would this be priced as the concentration fluctuates due to excess generation? How would you bill for those who extract the hydrogen and those who do not? Will every user on the grid be capable of accepting a gas hydrogen blend? As with most things hydrogen, it isn't perfect, yet.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has reported that its 90 MPa Class liquid hydrogen (LH2) pump has successfully operated for 250 hours in a long-term durability test. The test began in April 2023 at FirstElement Fuel’s Hydrogen Distribution Hub in Livermore, CA, and will continue into next year.   The test involved 300 run cycles of the pump resulting in 30 tons of liquid hydrogen transfer. This is the equivalent of fueling 1,100 fuel cell buses. The hydrogen transferred was used to refuel hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in California, resulting in zero-emissions transportation. Inspection of the pump revealed that all internal pump components are still in excellent condition, confirming the robustness and longevity of the pump.   The MHI LH2 pump has consistently and reliably achieved an output of 160 kg/h at a discharge pressure of 90 MPa. The pump design also ensures that hydrogen loss due to boil-off is negligible, thus enhancing the economics of the hydrogen refueling stations. Ceres has been awarded a further contract for the second phase of its collaboration with Shell, to cooperate in the design of a 10 MW solid oxide #electrolyser (#SOEC) module to produce #greenhydrogen for use in large-scale industrial applications such as #syntheticfuels, #ammonia, and #greensteel.   Ceres has been working with Shell since 2022, leading to the deployment of a 1 MW SOEC system at Shell’s R&D facility in Bangalore, India. Building on this demonstration, the focus of this contract is to develop a pressurised module design that can be scaled to hundreds of megawatts and be integrated with industrial plants to produce sustainable future fuels.   The programme will use key learnings and data being harvested from the existing 1 MW demonstration project to develop a commercially competitive and scalable solution.   Key to this is the significant efficiency gains offered by SOEC technology, which results in approximately 35% more #hydrogen produced per unit of electrical energy when coupled with #heat from industrial processes. The project will examine pressurised systems that can drive further efficiency, performance, and integration with other processes, targeting a module level efficiency of less than 36 kWh/kg of hydrogen, which aligns with EU SOE 2030 technology targets.
