Ever heard of an employer doing this? One of my clients reached out asking that we update the job description for an employee. Let’s call her Mary. Mary had been a Marketing Coordinator for a few years. But now… she was becoming an Administrative Assistant. Comp, benefits, all the same. Role? Completely different. I asked our client: “How does Mary feel about the change?” They responded: “She doesn’t know yet. We’ll tell her next week.” ... 😯 (I know Mary quite well, and she LOVES marketing…) “We don’t need a Marketing Coordinator anymore. We need an assistant. She’s good at it. It’s not an option.” The hard truth is that as a business owner, you need to make decisions that align with the best interest of your organization. However… Changing the fundamental terms of an employee's job description can create serious issues for your business. Also: How do you expect the rest of the staff to feel knowing this happened to their comrade? The truth is, I’ve had to deal with this on many occasions. For business owners, moves like these are tough but often necessary. But there's a line between treating your team like humans rather than just workers. The solution? Transparency and empathy. Handling your team with transparency and empathy will ensure that team members feel valued and respected. Mary's abrupt job role change is not just about her. It's about the culture and communication within the entire organization. The decisions we make as leaders have ripple effects impacting morale, trust, and the overall health of the team.
