Why do individuals continue to enter the #cannabis manufacturing and production sector despite the industry's reported challenges and signs of distress? Is this influx driven by a perception that opportunities for wealth and success are still attainable in an industry that some may see as their final chance, even if they lack qualifications in other fields? Could the increasing number of new applicants for licenses be indicative of a broader trend, potentially resulting in oversaturation of the market? For instance, in #Michigan, where monthly #cannabissales reached a record $276 million in July, the issuance of new licenses for growers and retailers each month might be contributing to the struggle of existing retailers to turn a profit. The situation appears complex, with #Michigancannabis having more than 2,000 active licenses for recreational use, leading to concerns about market sustainability. Similar patterns are emerging in other states, such as #Massachusetts, where low prices and intense competition threaten dispensary viability. Could this influx of new licenses, despite having social equity goals, contribute to a glut of supply, driving down prices and margins, and thereby leading to economic stress for operators throughout the supply chain? It seems that the attractiveness of the industry may stem from a mix of perceived financial potential and limited alternatives, despite the challenges it faces.

Farm Progress 2023: AgZen I was excited to have the opportunity to speak with Vishnu Jayaprakash, CEO of a new company AgZen, while I was working my way through the Farm Progress show last week. AgZen will come to your farm to measure the spray coverage of your chemical applications using whatever sprayer you have, larger or small. The camera system they use is easily mountable to your sprayer, and it collects images of the leaves before and after the sprayer passes over them. The images are then analyzed to provide a detailed report of the actual spray coverage you are getting in the field. Based on these findings, AgZen can then recommend spray additives to add in with your tank mix to improve the coverage. This means that less spray is wasted reducing costs and lowering the environmental impact of using commercial chemicals. Vishnu was quick to point out that only about 2% of sprayed herbicides and pesticides currently reach the plant surfaces they are intended for. 🤔 What’s the variability in starch properties of barley samples from all over the world? 📝 This is what we unravelled in our newly published paper “A global set of barley varieties shows a high diversity in starch structural properties and related gelatinisation characteristics” by Daan Gielens, Charlotte De Schepper, Niels Langenaeken, Ashley Galant, and Christophe Courtin 💡 In this work, the gelatinisation behaviour, amylose content and small to large granule proportions were assessed for 23 industrially relevant barley samples. Given the impact of high starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions on the brewing process, it makes us wonder: Should starch gelatinisation temperatures and granule proportions become selection criteria for barley? 🤔 Want to know more?
