Apple has reversed its decision to terminate Epic Games’ developer account in the European Union, reinstating the account after Epic committed to complying with the rules, including those set out in the Digital Markets Act (DMA), MacRumors reported. The decision to terminate Epic Games’ account earlier in the week had raised concerns about stifling the development of alternative app marketplaces. Apple Backtracks On Epic Games Account Termination Apple initially claimed the termination was due to Epic Games breaching contractual obligations and cited negative comments from CEO Tim Sweeney about DMA compliance as evidence that they were “likely to be untrustworthy.” The termination of Epic Games’ account prompted a swift response from the European Union, which demanded further clarification from Apple on the decision. Regulatory pressure likely contributed to Apple’s decision to reconsider the termination. In response to the reinstatement, Epic Games announced it would move forward with its plans to lunch the Epic Games Store in Europe and bring Fortnite back to iOS. The company sees Apple’s response as a signal that the European Commission plans to enforce the DMA. Lots of fun announcements this week at GDC, and one of the biggies is that Epic Games is launching their store on iOS and Android. We knew it was coming, and this will be a BIG disruption in the ecosystem. Epic has a lot of super powers: - Out of the gate, they'll already take a lot less rev share than the other platforms - They'll reward exclusivity (which isn't really a big practice on mobile and could be good for smaller devs) - They're a respected player in games and advocate for devs - Devs have more freedom on their storefront, such as being able to use their own payment providers - They have an engine that is being used more and more in the mobile space - They have Fortnite. Fortnite *could* be used in creative ways to attract their massive playerbase to their storefront, which then benefits other games - They're giving developers CHOICE - This might inspire other major players to give their own storefront a go (Netflix, Microsoft, etc.) What else did I miss? https://lnkd.in/g8PT_iEb

Here comes an idealistic thought moment. Before Epic Games Publisher account got banned from the Apple Store, Fornite did $1.1b lifetime revenue on the platform. At $150 average lifetime value of Fortnite players, that's a tad more than 7 million players. The average lifetime value of Apple users is estimated between $8,000 and $10,000. We'll pick the lowest. 7 million players at $8,000 lifetime value is $56b. App Store revenue was about $27b in 2022. With this figures in mind, please calculate how fast would Apple allow Epic back to the Apple Store and negotiate lower revenue share models if all Fornite players of Apple would switch to the competition in protest. #IndieRevolution #GamerPower

This is getting interesting If You've followed the Epic vs Apple | Android story so far, it's clear to see what Epic games is driving towards. These platform game distributors make a killing from apps listed on their stores. Apple makes up to 30% (Royalties In-App purchases) from developers and Epic obviously hates that! Epic has excellent money-making IPs in Fortnite, Fall Guys etc. Now is the time to milk all the $$ (no one knows how long their time in the spotlight will last) so it's an intelligent gambit to become a platform and gain a much larger revenue slice. How's EPIC doing so far, It has: ~ Released Epic stores on Android, PC and legally pushing for IOS releases. ~ Struck a deal with Unreal Engine, that sees royalties for Devs reduce to 3.5% as long as they release a game on the Epic store. ~ Stipulated a 12% royalty fee (cheaper than Apple & Google | Android native stores) after a 6-month cliff.
