Excellent example of REUSE in the building industry: The principles of "Design for Disassembly" is just in line with INDUSTRY 5.0 principles - Preventing Wasting in the first place, Waste of any form or shape. Physical WASTE: Surplus, used and released products and materials that can be Reused, Repaired, Reconfigured, Refurbished, Redesigned. Our two-step approach for evaluating discomfort from glare (alternative to the de Boer scale) was recently cited in a paper on “Discomfort Glare in outdoor environments after dark – a review of methods, measures, and models” by Yulia T.. The two-step approach stemmed from the work of the IES DGONE Committee. Tyukhova compares the two-step model to similar approaches, and also notes that work is needed to compare the new model to existing models. https://lnkd.in/djT-sp-j While the de Boer scale is widely used to measure discomfort from glare, commonly in studies of pedestrian-scale outdoor lighting, its design has several problems that lead to noise in the data and in turn to continued disagreement about the prediction of discomfort. We (Steve Fotios, Belal Abboushi, Ph.D. and Naomi Miller) propose a two-step alternative approach for rating discomfort from glare. 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙢 𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥? The Kunsthaus in Graz is a fascinating example of contemporary architecture and engineering. Situated in Graz, Austria, this museum is renowned for its innovative design and unique features. Architecturally, the Kunsthaus is a striking #structure that stands out in its urban surroundings. Designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, it is often referred to as the "Friendly Alien" due to its unconventional appearance. The building resembles a large biomorphic bubble, with a steel structure covered in a skin of blue acrylic panels. This organic form and vibrant color create a captivating visual impact. The engineering behind the Kunsthaus is equally impressive. The building's structure is a combination of steel and reinforced concrete. The architects collaborated with structural engineers from Bollinger Grohmann to realize their visionary design. One of the notable features of the Kunsthaus is its energy-efficient design. The architects incorporated several sustainable elements into the building. The blue acrylic panels that envelop the exterior act as a shading device, reducing solar heat gain and minimizing the need for artificial cooling. Documented in DETAIL 6.2024 Climate and Resources: Het Bosbad Housing in Eindhoven (NL) by GAAGA Circularity, simple reversibility and the desire to create residential space in proximity to the natural environment were the conceptual focus of the housing structure Het Bosbad. About 400 peeled eucalyptus logs provide the design with a striking visual impression. The reuse of these construction components is possible without difficulty. For the design, the Delft-based architecture office Gaaga found inspiration in the Japanese nature therapy method of #ShinrinYoku. Translated literally, the term means “forest bathing”. The property offers ideal preconditions for this purpose. Bordering a large park, it is situated at the northeastern tip of the urban development zone of Bosrijk, west of Eindhoven. According to Gaaga, 85% of building materials can be reused or recycled. Hardwood boards that previously served as embankment were applied as facade siding. The primary structure consists of prefabricated concrete elements with detachable bolt connectors. Presenting "The Great Reef" by Debbie Flevotomou Architect The Great Reef is a unique example of architecture, designed with Biophilic and Parametric principles to enhance both user enjoyment and productivity. This architectural gem features a Grand Auditorium/ Gallery Space. Adopting an "ecosophical" approach, The Great Reef goes beyond traditional design paradigms. It harmonizes environmental, mental, and social dimensions through a holistic design process, fostering a symbiotic relationship between built and natural environments. This transversal design method accommodates complexity and interaction, creating diverse spatial forms that cater to individual experiences. A standout feature of The Great Reef is its innovative hybrid structure, comprising two interconnected Geodesic domes. The primary shallow geodesic dome supports a secondary tall dome that houses the Grand Auditorium and additional levels. Cantilevered upper-level trusses extend outward, offering inviting outdoor spaces for public use.
