Emerald Brand products do not cause harm to the environment! We are Tree Free™ and plastic-free. 91% of the plastics used in the healthcare sector are not recycled. When items are not recycled they end up in landfills and oceans, causing harm and pollution to our environment. (Journal of Ethics, 2022) Emerald offers plastic alternatives made from plants. Our products are transforming agricultural waste into something new! These products are made from the by-product of rapidly renewable resources like sugarcane, bamboo, and corn stalk. 40% - that’s how much of the food we produce in the U.S. is bound for the landfill. A $2.4 million grant from the USDA aims to address this issue, supporting researchers at Virginia Tech in their quest to make use of this abundant energy source. VT’s Sustainable Environment Research Laboratory (SERL) purifies polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced in microbial fermentations to manufacture common household goods, including multiple forms of packaging. By fueling bioplastics production with food waste, SERL is addressing multiple environmental issues simultaneously, including petroleum-based plastics production, landfill use, and #microplastics pollution. 🌍🌱The development and adoption of seaweed-based bioplastics represent an exciting frontier in sustainable packaging. As technology advances and more research is conducted, we can expect to see increased use of these materials in various industries, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. 💡One notable example of seaweed-based bioplastics in action is Kelpy, a female-led seaweed start-up featured in a compelling piece from The Fish Site. Kelpy operates as a bioprocessing start-up and has achieved significant success in developing resins for both flexible and rigid plastic replacement products. #successstory A clean, low-energy production line has been implemented, strategically bypassing the necessity for expensive, multi-staged processing. This approach places emphasis on prioritizing waste stream seaweeds and emerging lower quality varieties, deliberately avoiding any competition with seaweeds earmarked for food and high-grade products. 🌐 Drawing inspiration from Kelpy's approach, we can underscore the pivotal role of strategically sourcing and implementing scale-up strategies. Going global, by selectively opt for with seaweeds that are abundant, ethically, and sustainably sourced. Read more, here: https://lnkd.in/d8a9g9_B #aquaculture #seaweed #bioplastic #bioprocessing

Some industry news... Australian packaging company, Coveris Group, introduces sustainable stretch films for the agricultural market- set to save up to 20 litres of crude oil per film roll. Referred to as 'Unterland R' and 'Unterland Crystal', these will be exhibited at the agricultural trade show, Agritechnic, scheduled to take place between 12th and 18th of November in Hannover, Germany. Both examples of film are manufactured using renewable resources at the Coveris facility located in Austria. Very interesting to see the agricultural industry embrace recycled plastics. #plastics #recycled #polymers
