BeMed Project Off to a Flying Start in Albania and Tunisia! 🌍 In May 2024, the #BeMed initiative launched its efforts to combat plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region, marking significant progress in #Albania and #Tunisia. Funded by the Fonds français pour l'environnement mondial (FFEM) and guided by Beyond Plastic Med, this ambitious project addresses one of the region's most pressing environmental issues. 🔎 Focus on Albania: In Albania, the project is spearheaded by the Surfrider Foundation Europe and coordinated by the Institute for Nature Conservation in Albania (INCA). The #ShkumbinRiver reservoir, heavily contaminated with plastic waste, is the primary focus. With the motto, “Come along too! Let's create a map of plastic pollution in the Shkumbin River together,” the project emphasizes community involvement. 📲 Key activities include: - An informative training session on the “Plastic Origins” app, held near the #Elbasan Youth Center, engaging young attendees, municipal representatives, local NGOs, and sports tourism operators. - Practical application through a rafting activity on the Shkumbin River, where participants used the app to document pollution levels. 🚣♀️ For consecutive days, representatives of Surfrider Foundation Europe, INCA ALBANIA, and the Elbasan Sport and Tourism Agency inspected the Shkumbin River, collecting crucial data on pollution hotspots and categories of polluters. 🗺 Next steps: The collected data will create a detailed pollution map of the Shkumbin River, instrumental in advocating action with local authorities.
