A few of the best things that we, as coaches and coordinators of strength and conditioning, can provide our personnel are: fitness resources to learn, actionalize, grow individually and as a team, and repeat! As large as Fairfax County Fire & Rescue, and Police Departments are (3,000 combined members), we make sure to provide our personnel with access to our materials through: intranet pages, our own YouTube video shares, our Peer Fitness Coaches, and much much more. We also provide workout programming that is progressive and adaptive for our people to grow, while still allowing all shifts ample time for them to adapt to the movements and program flow. This helps keep them engaged, not feeling left behind or lost, and through movement variations and creativity; not feeling stagnant or bored. This goes for operational and light duty personnel alike. The only difference between operational and light duty athletes is that we work with their restrictions and modifications to allow them to strengthen the rest of their non-injured muscle groups using the same workout as our operational people. In the picture below is an example of one of our most recent workout programs. This cycle we are working on muscle splits, M-upper/T-lower/W-upper/Th-lower/F-full. We harp on form, recovery, progressively and smartly adding weight where one can, and teaching them how to jump into our programming even if you’ve missed previous days. All the… Pitching coaches. QB coaches. Catching coaching. Shooting coaches. Club sports teams. Elite training centers. Have it all backward! They train the position or sport first. Plugging each athlete into their cookie-cutter program. The problem is the athletes are probably not ready or even need it. Instead, train the human first, then the athlete, then the sport, then the position. Let your kid become a good human first. Dialing in nutrition, sleep, and being able to move properly. Then get them more athletic. Being able to sprint, jump, throw, crawl, roll, hop, skip, climb, and a bunch of other athletic movements. This allows them to become better at their sports or positions. Even if they only play one sport they should be efficient in other sports and movements because it helps them become better movers and problem solvers. This is what we do in our Youth Athletes 4 Life program. We help kids become better athletes through nutrition, sleep, habits, and a training program that is built for them! We don’t plug them into a cookie-cutter program built for someone else. We design a plan that meets them where they are and progress at their pace. If you want your athletes to start being better athletes, get them started with TAG! There is lots of good advice in this article BAUER CONSULTING: Sport Psychology based mental skills ‘PRIORTIZATION’ not specialization. A TERM I HOPE TO PUT IN THE POPULAR DISCUSSION OF THIS TOPIC Pick the right moments to PRIORITIZE one sport over the other rather than simply specializing… this is a critical miss happening now. I think Multisport athletes who play because they have a passion and aim to be the best they can become are getting the most out of the experience Different sports require different timelines So commitment, timing and experience vary. One should believe a child who loves their sport will get the most out of themselves and their experience. Elite sport requires surpassing incredible challenges and lessons and the athletes themselves needs their passion for the sport as the fuel to get through that, not parents dictating or coaches using them for wins in lieu of development Prioritizing allows the benefits and fun of mutile sports to create a more capable functional and fit athlete in the long term This is easily the next book needed

Can your kids still be multisport stars like #deionsanders #tombrady #bojackson and #drewbrees or should they pick one sport? Maybe you should consider the career of U.S. national team rower Sophia Vitas, who found her favorite sport in college. Right now, maybe your kids should just be playing many sports for the overall mental and physical health benefits. Here are five tips to help them find the right moment to specialize in a sport (if they specialize at all). Thanks to Michele Labotz, Eric Post, Tamara Valovich McLeod, Gregory Walker and Vitas for their insight for this column.

When does the training session begin? When does it end? You might be surprised when you find out that most athletes remain catabolic for hours after their training sessions as a result of a failure to regulate their nervous systems. This mismanagement of the nervous system costs them in many ways. Everything from reduced nutrient delivery to a shortened recovery window, the impact of overlooking nervous system regulation can have a snowball effect, leading to reduced performance, increased propensity for injury, and a greater chance of illness. All of these things cost valuable time that one could be using for growth and higher levels of training. This is Joe Bobe a competitive BJJ athlete from Indiana. In this picture, we are learning to regulate the nervous system and maximize the results of training. Joe is already an incredible athlete, and like most amazing athletes, he is invested in becoming better in every way possible. Are you ready to learn to get the most out of your training? I am opening 3 slots for 1 on 1 training. These sessions come with the enhancement of the cutting-edge Oxa device. These personalized programs are for athletes who want to want to have an edge on their competition. If you are interested, DM me with the word "TRAIN" today, and we will find a time to discuss what my program can do for you. #bjj #athlete #athleticperformance #breathwork #breathe #breath #sports #athleticperformance #enhanced #focus #leadership #coaching #mindset #Athletics #mma #fighter #gym #gymlife #health #wellness #gym #gymmotivation #training #nervoussystem #science

How the gym taught me the importance of community... So, here's a little something I learned this week that I just had to share: the gym isn't just about lifting weights, it's about the people you're lifting them with. I've been hitting the gym since the start of high school, always pushing myself to get stronger, faster, better. But this week, something clicked for me. My school started doing these team lifts in the mornings for us athletes. And let me tell you, the vibe was totally different. We were all in it together, cheering each other on, shouting encouragement, and celebrating every new personal record. And guess what? It worked. I finally nailed that squat record I'd been struggling with for weeks. Plus, I was just five pounds shy of breaking the school record in hang clean. But honestly, it's not just about my achievements. What really hit me was how having a crew of people backing you up can totally change the game. When you've got people rooting for you and pushing toward the same goals, suddenly everything feels more achievable. So, moral of the story: community matters. Having that support system makes all the difference. It keeps you focused, motivated, and set on crushing your goals, even when things get tough. When has the power of community amazed you? #fitnesscommunity #teamwork #support #motivation #personalgrowth #goalsetting #fitnessjourney #communityengagement #achievement #successmindset

Training Day by Robinson Athletics. Playing a sport for 20 years for most athletes is an advantage and making sure you are strong and healthy to perform at a high level every night . Its the goal for most hockey players and athletes. But it’s post career where things can get difficult on lifestyle adaptivity . It’s important to have a purpose and stay strong and healthy for mental and physical reasons. There are new goals shifted and staying fit becomes not anymore for your specific sport you played , it’s being fit for the rest of your life to live day to day as a normal person . You have to think about the next 20 years of your life and what matters . “Training camp” for me now , means stay fit for me and my kids and to enjoy life at the highest level with NO aches and pains , NO internal health problems from self deprivation ,that should be the “goal “ for everyone . “I don’t want to only walk with my kids” all the time , I want to run , jump, climb , push, crawl, swim , I want to be the strongest and healthiest version of myself for them and be an example to my kids too. By using health and fitness as formality and base to success . It’s a discipline , its a commitment you develop strong values threw “Training Day”. When I see a fit human being , I see more then abs and muscles . I see someone that is mentally tough also , I see someone that is organized and cares. I see someone that has strong leadership qualities . These kind of people you want around you , these kind of people have self love and the mental health side of it all , “STRONG WILL” means healthy minds and you can always depend on those people . Because at the end of the day ,they have invested into themselves to be there best version of them to be a positive influence to the youth. Stay healthy and love yourself .
