A friend asked to meet to talk about company values.
He is in the process of defining the values for a large multi-site organisation that is genuinely changing its industry. He told me:
"I'm getting caught up in my own thoughts."
We spent some time together, stepping back and assessing where he had got to, taking the opportunity to hear the thinking and feelings that had led to a great but rough set of five values.
I spent a large proportion of last year redefining Brightec's values and was able to share 3 key lessons:
1️⃣ Take your time.
You don't want to write values that just reflect this week's feelings; you want to live with them year after year. Take the time to see how they resonate with you and your team.
2️⃣ Don't be clever.
I feel the pull to craft something that people will see as smart and witty, but it needs to be authentic and meaningful. And if that means it's simple and maybe even 'twee', then embrace it; creating values that don't reflect you would be much worse.
3️⃣ Take the team on the journey.
Get your team's input and record people's comments. Let everyone, from the entry-level to the most senior, tell you what they think of your values and how they interpret them.
