In this research from OECD Education and Skills, it is great to see Australian schools statistically above average for creative thinking.
We have recently done exciting work with Dr Tim Patston, the leader of Creative Actions consultancy activities, where together we developed new additional questions that schools using Pivot's Student Survey on Teaching can add to their next survey cycle. This provides deeper insights into areas of interest such as creativity in education.

Japan's decision "not to participate" in the PISA 2022 assessment of creative thinking caught my attention (Country Notes I, OECD) 🇯🇵 This omission is particularly interesting given that neighboring Korea has excelled in this area 🇰🇷
As an educator working very hard to incorporate opportunities to foster critical thinking 💡 in my classes in Japan, I wonder about the implications of this omission. If countries can opt out of assessments where they anticipate less favorable outcomes, how does this impact the overall integrity and comprehensiveness of the data? 📊❓
I'm not looking to stir the pot but genuinely curious. Perhaps there is a more innocent background and context behind Japan's abstention. 🌏🔍
What do my esteemed colleagues think about this? Does anyone know why?🤔💬

As President and CEO of Curiosity 2 Create and co-founder of Creative Thinking Network, I help educators infuse their existing curriculum with creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.
For the first time, PISA (OECD Education and Skills) measures the creative thinking skills of 15-year-old students.
Creative thinking can be an important tool for innovation and the transfer of knowledge in finding solutions to the challenges we may face in the coming years.
While educational systems are examining their readiness to support students in mastering creative thinking skills, reading promoters know that reading a wide range of fictional and non-fictional books from an early age contributes to children's ability to gain background knowledge, develop socio-emotional skills, and become better equipped to apply what they already know in different ways.
Reading is a great option to support creative thinking outside the curriculum. Don’t you agree?

ACARA statement on the OECD PISA 2022 – Creative Minds, Creative Schools report.
Welcoming the findings of the OECD’s latest PISA 2022 report ‘Creative Minds, Creative Schools’, ACARA Acting CEO Stephen Gniel said:
“Critical and creative thinking is one of the Australian Curriculum’s general capabilities, which are integrated and applied across all the learning areas. So, it’s pleasing to see Australia as amongst those singled out for praise by the OECD as a high-performing system in the world for creative thinking in education.
“Supporting the growth of students’ critical and creative thinking capabilities is one of the ways that the Australian Curriculum develops our young people’s skills for life. Thanks to the dedication of teachers and principals right around the country, the Australian Curriculum comes alive in their hands as they make the expert decisions about the learning experience each student needs in order to succeed.
“As our recently released 2023 NAP Science Literacy assessment also demonstrated, students who reported engaging more frequently in Critical and Creative Thinking (CCT) activities tended to have higher levels of science literacy.
“Overall Australian students’ strong creative thinking results are a positive outcome of our country’s long-term strategic commitment to creative thinking in our curriculum and our assessment and reporting practices.”

I strongly believe that America needs to completely rethink and overhaul its human capital development systems. The 19th-century model, to which we've added a few patches and bandaids along the way, is not suitable for the more complex and uncertain 21st-century existence.

Finland is emerging as a destination for international students seeking top-quality higher education opportunities. With a good reputation in education, the country is drawing diverse cohorts of students from various geographies and cultures. This also coincides with Finland's need for international labour due to the ageing population and declining workforce.
However, the journey of these international students in Finland presents multiple challenges concerning integration and career prospects. Language appears to be a significant obstacle, and more traditional industries and organisations are still shy to employ international labour in large quantities.
We at Haaga-Helia recognised the need for a more effective support regime for our international students. We are launching a two-year project on January 24 to help them better integrate, advance in their studies, and get employed faster. The project will be like action research, testing various methods to identify the most sustainable and effective ones. The project is going to be financed by Helia Säätiö.
We are planning to contact our partners and other potential employers and stakeholders for collaboration. Please contact me or my colleagues Liisa Wallenius and Niina Moilanen if the topic interests you and you may have an idea! Although services are developed for all international students of Haaga-Helia, the pilot group for the two year project is Porvoo Campus international students. There is no limitation for institutional partners.
I am very excited to manage this project as an international who experienced the same challenges many years ago and had to become an entrepreneur to create self-employment.
