In recent weeks, #mobile users of several major financial institutions in #SouthKorea were targeted by a #FakeApp / #FakeBank Android campaign. The attackers disguised their malware as fake applications, claiming to be from either a prominent cooperative bank, a government-owned asset management corporation, one of the largest commercial banks, or a savings-focused brand. This campaign poses significant risks to both #consumers and #enterprises. Once installed on a mobile device, the #malware declares the AccessibilityService allowing it to install external malicious apps without user consent. This #Android feature is intended to assist users with disabilities by automating tasks and providing alternative interaction methods, however it's widely abused by various Android malware actors around the world. The actors have embedded HTML and malicious within the fake apps to steal user data – a technique commonly use to present fake login pages that look like legitimate sites such as banks, to steal credentials. Additionally, malicious scripts can capture keystrokes or intercept data entered into forms, enabling real-time data theft as users interact with their devices. While this threat's run-of-the-mill capabilities make it a pretty generic Android malware, it is obfuscated with Virbox Protector in hopes of making it difficult for security researchers and antivirus software to analyze and detect it. Virbox Protector is a tool designed to enhance the security of mobile applications and software development kits (SDKs). The modus operandi is yet to be confirmed. Although we believe the malicious apps are most likely being spread via malicious SMS, other vectors should not be ruled out.
