Child marriage among girls in India has declined from 49% to 22% since 1993, but 1 in 5 girls - and nearly 1 in 6 boys - are still married below the legal age. Urgent policy efforts are needed to achieve SDG goal 5.3 of ending child marriage by 2030. In India child marriage is a major challenge. Yet change is happening, I have been learning from the change-makers the children and youth for 19 years, listening to stories, such as: “We could not get the police to come in time to stop the marriage of a 12-year-old girl in our village, so we sneaked in and destroyed the wedding party preparations, and in this way delayed the marriage in time for it to be stopped”. Incredibly brave children. So important that so many youth/men in the villages are saying that they will not marry a girl under the age of 18, standing side-by-side with the girls! The figures below are hard to believe, on October 16th over 900,000 schools took part in a mass campaign to start to end child marriage, but it is correct! The minimum age of marriage is 21 years in case of males, and 18 years in case of females in India https://lnkd.in/e9EbTJSP

Child From Void/Voidable Marriage Cannot Be Treated As Coparcener By Birth In Mitakshara Hindu Undivided Family: Supreme Court Case title: Revanasiddappa v. Mallikarjun Citation: 2023 INSC 783 The Supreme Court, while holding that a child born from a void or a voidable marriage is entitled to parents' share in a Hindu Undivided Family(HUF) governed by Mitakshara law, clarified that such a child cannot be treated as coparcener by birth in the HUF. "If a person born from a void or voidable marriage to whom legitimacy is conferred by sub-sections (1) or (2) of Section 16 [of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955] were to have an interest by birth in a Hindu Undivided Family governed by Mitakshara law, this would certainly affect the rights of others apart from the parents of the child.", the bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra observed.

Poverty is already one critical factor that increases the vulnerability of families and communities to child marriage. The lack of resources and opportunities leads to seeing child marriage as a means to alleviate financial burdens. In many other cases, it is an opportunity for families to secure a better future for their children, such as through dowry. This study unfolds the complexity of child marriage in the selected areas of Cotabato and Marawi. While faith norms are influential, socioeconomic and political factors also perpetuate this harmful practice.
