The Sarpanch of Rajpur Gram Panchayat, Mrs. Priyanka Tiwari , comes from Uttar Pradesh and shared that she was deeply concerned about lack of cleanliness in her village. This prompted her to take action.
What's even more remarkable is that she has no political background, family connections, or political ambitions. She took on this initiative solely because she was deeply affected by the village's problems, including poor condition of schools.
Today, her village has clean streets, proper roads, and teachers in schools.
When I asked Priyanka Ji if she faced any challenges due to the devolution of power, she said that she encountered no difficulties. She received the support she needed to achieve her goals.
Despite having a modest annual budget, she has managed to bring over two crore rupees worth of projects to her Gram Panchayat in 3 years, whether through MLA funds or MP funds.
She has shown that if a sarpanch genuinely wishes to serve their community, funding is not an issue, and devolution of power is not a significant obstacle. Teachers come to school on time.
The quality of education in school has improved, and there is student council with various roles. This is not only promoting leadership among the children but also contributing to the overall development of all the children in the village.
She shared many examples that highlight her achievements. To learn more about her story, watch the podcast!

The Modi government’s “Housing for All (Urban)” scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Mission aimed at providing houses to all eligible families by 2022. Prakash has been trying to see that his family is ‘eligible.’
“I keep trying to avail the scheme’s benefits for my family. But with no income proof and valid documents, I might never be eligible for it,” he says.
He finds even more troubling the state government’s notification to alter the rules of the Right to Education ( RTE ) act for the state of Maharashtra made in February this year (2024). According to this notification, if a government or government-aided school exists within one kilometre of the child’s residence, he or she must take admission there. This means private, including English-medium schools, are barred from giving admission within the RTE’s 25 per cent quota for children from marginalised communities. “That actually stands the RTE Act on its head,” Prof. Sudhir Paranjape of the Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti (Save the Aided Schools Association) told PARI.
“With such decisions, we can't afford quality education. The only law, which would guarantee that, no longer exists [with this notification]. How will we progress then?” he asks, anguished.
Quality education for the next generation is the only way forward for Prakash and others in Damu Nagar. And there is little doubt about the marginalised status of Damu Nagar’s children. The majority of residents here, some of whom have been living in this slum for four decades, are neo-Buddhists – that is, Dalits. For many, their grandparents and parents migrated to Mumbai from Jalna and Solapur during the great 1972 drought that ravaged the state.

📚 Today, on World Day Against Child Labour, let's shine a light on a crucial issue: the right to education for every child. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without the burden of child labour.
At Ekam Foundation Mumbai, we believe that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future. Most of the children we support through Ekam’s EEP program suffer from constant pressure created by the burden of poverty, which results in young children needing to discontinue school, taking up jobs in so-called ‘non-hazardous’ areas just to keep their family afloat. That's why we're committed to providing support through scholarships and funding educational expenses of underprivileged children, especially girls, who are at risk of dropping out of school due to economic hardships.
Education empowers children to break the cycle of poverty, pursue their dreams, and build a better tomorrow for themselves and their communities. Together, let's ensure that every child has the chance to receive a quality education and reach their full potential. 📝🎓

🌟 Day 5 of Our Internal Capacity Building Workshop on Constitutional Values in Haridwar! 🇮🇳✨
Today, we delved into Day 5 of our internal capacity building workshop, focusing on the essential constitutional values. The session started with context setting, followed by an in-depth discussion on various core values integral to our constitution. We then reviewed posters from different workshop days at degree colleges and excitingly added two new days—Environmental Day and Independence Day—bringing our total to 8 dedicated days for engaging with college youths across various districts.
A quiz on constitutional values enriched our understanding further. We then shared insights on the various youth clubs developed by our team members in different districts of Uttarakhand, such as the Catalyst Club in Uttarkashi, Trihari Club in Tehri, and Be the Change in Chamoli.
I had the privilege to share the journey of our "Be the Change" youth club in Gopeshwar, detailing its formation, our strategies for mobilizing the youth, and our engagement activities at the TLC, including the Reading Fest, "Inse Miliye" sessions, special day celebrations, and future planning discussions. Additionally, I outlined our action plan for the upcoming months and ongoing projects.
The day wrapped up with a Q&A session, addressing any doubts from foundation members. It was a highly productive and insightful day, further solidifying our commitment to promoting constitutional values and engaging with the youth.

Transforming Lives Through Education
Imagine if every child could learn, grow and thrive.
This is the aim of Ek Pahel, a non profit organisation in the city of Taj, that offers quality education, schooling needs to destitute children in Uttar Pradesh and provide platform to empower children.
It has been 13 years since Ek Pahel began with 30 students. Currently, it operates with 750 students, providing academic, life skills and health care support not only to these children but also to their mothers and other family members.
However, this is not a walk in the park. Ek Pahel faces multiple challenges
- Encouraging Parent and Community Beliefs on Education for Girls.
- Fighting with malnutrition.
- Counseling parents to continue the education of their children after X also class instead of forcing their children to work for some pennies
- Assisting students for higher education
Ek Pahel team however does not give up. And it is the results that propel us to keep on going…
Ek Pahel’s students are shining bright with amazing grades, self-confidence, futuristic goals and determined to break the shackles of discrimination at home and community. Some proceed to obtain further education or professional training.
The journey to empowerment, however, requires your support.
For those who want to make a difference with us, visit our site at www.ekpahel.com and contribute. Every rupee counts.
Let us come together to make Ek Pahel roar high.

🔴 Do you think one of your child's classmates is a potential dropout?
🔴 When you were in school, has your classmate ever dropped out of school without notice?
M. Kalai did not turn up in school for 20 days right after the COVID-19 pandemic, and his teachers were wondering why.
When the Block Resource Teacher’s Educators (BRTE) visited Kalai to inquire, they understood why he was not coming to school and why he might drop out altogether.
Kalai's parents are daily wage labourers. During the pandemic, they had to migrate from place to place to find labour. Now they live far away from the schools they could afford.
Fortunately, Kalai, like other dropouts during the pandemic, was enrolled in a government residential school by the BRTE.
Tamil Nadu’s BRTEs work very hard to prevent dropouts. Many other social problems prevent a child from getting education as well. They dig deep and get to the root cause and ensure children are in school and stay in school.
What do you think the other problems are? Share with us in the comments.
