Joby Aviation are feeling pretty good after receiving the all-important Part 145 Repair Station Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this week, reports a press release. The company believes they are “the first eVTOL developer” to receive this particular certification from the FAA. This allows the company to perform select maintenance activities including maintenance repair operations (MRO) and overhaul on its eVTOL aircraft fleet, marking another key step on the path to commercialising Joby’s electric air taxi service. Bonny Simi, Joby President of Operations, remarked, “This approval marks another foundational piece of Joby’s vertically-integrated strategy, including aircraft development, manufacturing, charging systems, commercial flight operations, and now MRO services, as we prepare to bring our revolutionary eVTOL aircraft to market.” She continued, “Receiving the Part 145 certificate from the FAA is an important step towards developing the needed maintenance, repair and overhaul services to support Joby’s commercial flight operations, as well as establishing career pipelines for people who want to become eVTOL aircraft technicians.” Under this particular certificate, Joby is to begin performing select airframe, radio and instrument repairs on traditional aircraft, with plans to expand its MRO services in the coming months and years. The certificate also allows Joby to provide paid on-the-job training to aspiring aircraft technicians. Part 1 of 2 parts Aerodrome Certification Developed in partnership with the Airports Council International (ACI), this Implementation Package (iPack) is a self-contained product that will assist Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs) and airport operators in the development, implementation, and oversight of an aerodrome certification program. It includes relevant documentation, tools, and an online course to facilitate each recipient’s aerodrome certification goals. A dedicated subject matter expert will also work with the CAA and/or airport operator(s), providing guidance in their implementation efforts to achieve the objectives of the iPack. In addition, as part of this iPack, an airport operator will receive a peer review of its facilities under the auspices of the Airports Council International’s (ACI) APEX Programme. Based on ICAO standards, national regulations, and ACI best practices, the APEX Programme combines the mandate for regulatory compliance with day-to-day operational needs to maximize operational efficiency and safety and/or security standards. Moreover, APEX Reviews are tailored to the individual needs of airports and APEX Reports propose effective and targeted solutions. GOAL The goal of this iPack is to aid State Civil Aviation Authorities and airport operators in addressing the technical challenges related to the development and implementation of an aerodrome certification program. It not only includes the guidance needed to comply with international certification standards, but also the tools required to build robust regulatory, certification, and oversight processes as appropriate. As with all iPacks, this Aerodrome Certification iPack combines standardized guidance materials, training, and consultative support from subject matter experts. OBJECTIVES Following the successful deployment this iPack, aerodrome operators and/or CAAs will be better equipped to: develop, implement, and/or approve as appropriate the procedures needed to monitor and properly maintain the aerodrome’s physical environment, visual aids, and other infrastructure; develop, implement, and/or approve as appropriate aerodrome operational procedures and the safety management system; develop, implement, and/or certify as appropriate the aerodrome manual and other relevant documentation; and develop, implement, and/or approve as appropriate the monitoring processes necessary to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements for the issuance of the certificate. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience for this iPack includes Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs), specifically those personnel involved in developing aerodrome certification regulations and conducting aerodrome certification and oversight activities. It also addresses the needs of airport operators by familiarizing their technical staff with ICAO standards, and providing the tools necessary to develop and implement an effective aerodrome certification programme.

I spent the first 12 years of my commercial aviation career flying single engines, with a mix of piston and turbines including a lot of radial engines. I can remember that life revolved around where I would go or what I would do if my engine failed. After transition to multi engine two crew platforms it's a complete reversal of mentality. Engine failures while certainly are a dramatic event they are easily handled, trained for and practiced, especially if your fortunate enough to visit a simulator for your training. We do things in the simulator that you would never dream of training in a real airplane. My first SIM instructor drilled the single engine mentality out of me, despite my convictions and even with advanced warning of which engine was going to fail I soon abandoned my ideas of relanding after V1. However I still carry some of my single engine mentality in my daily flying. I'm always looking put the window thinking to myself "There's a good spot, I could land there", or if it's wide open ocean or mountain peaks I scan my engine guages more often than usual. Nothing wrong with that. With two engines gone are the days of ditching the airplane straight ahead or trying to make that dangerous turn back to the lake from 800 feet with no power. I'm quite greatful when I have two engines, 2 more hands and eyeballs and another brain to interact with. Of course I still fly single engine almost predominantly, but when I have two of almost everything I do recognise the improvement in safety. I've never actually had a catastrophic engine failure in real life! But I have had 6 (editted - I forgot one) major power losses, all but one of them in single engine piston aircraft.
