Over the last five weeks, I have enjoyed the privilege of being in the 2024 cohort for Morgan Stanley’s Summer Academy. The academy consisted of six sessions focused on giving us valuable insight into the life of someone working in finance, and information to help build the foundations of a successful career in financial services:
💰How Money Works: Given information about the many roles within an investment bank and the impact those roles have on the global economy. Focussing on areas such as retail, corporate, and investment banking, with additional information on global capital markets.
📈Morgan Stanley Newsroom: Looked into the acquisition of Evri, by private equity firm Apollo, in which Morgan Stanley was an advisor. This session dove into the details of how mergers and acquisitions work, and the role of an investment bank in these transactions.
❓How Will They Remember You?: This session focused on the art of networking, and making successful first impressions within and outside the workplace.
🧐A Mind Of Your Own, Using Critical Thinking To Add Value: Taught the importance of critical thinking and how it can be executed effectively.
👨💼Starting A Career At Morgan Stanley: Explored paths into a successful career at financial institutions such as Morgan Stanley, and discussed key traits, attributes, and skills of valued employees. This included qualities such as problem solving, attention to detail, and communication.
📝Write Your CV With Morgan Stanley: Given guidance and advice on producing/refining my CV. Furthermore, I received help crafting a cover letter for future applications.
Overall, these sessions gave me an insight into the world of finance in more detail than I had known before, widened my knowledge of specific areas such as IB and S&T, and finally, the academy equipped me with the necessary skills to pursue a successful career within finance.
