I was once a Psych undergrad nearing the end of my degree, knowing, without a doubt, that I didn't want to pursue further formal education, and in my field, this meant a pivot. The two marketing internships I sought out back to back in my final year were incredibly important in aligning my career path and enabling me to gain clarity on what it was I wanted to do. Fast forward 11 years, and I find myself in a position where I am actively contributing to trying to make sure all students, regardless of their background, have access to these opportunities. One such way is for universities to actively integrate internships into degree programs, helping students from diverse backgrounds to build relevant skills and stand out in the job market. Let's level the playing field 👉 Virtual Internships
The NACE 2023 Student Survey found internships opportunities were not equitably distributed for Class of 2023 graduates, with male students, white students, students who are not first generation, and students who are not Pell Grant recipients more likely to participate in internships than other groups of students. https://ow.ly/H5YM50PxLOw

Academic leader with primary focus on social justice and equity. Adjunct professor of philosophy. Fixer.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. Chief Strategy Officer @ Virtual Internships | Scaling EdTech for Global Impact and Workforce Development
Internships have been instrumental in shaping my career. Reflecting on the past 15 years, I credit my initial internships as the foundation that steered my professional journey, even with its inevitable twists and turns. Internships aren't merely a rite of passage. They're a tangible proof to employers that a candidate is ready to transition from a structured syllabus-led academic environment to a dynamic workplace. It's more than just showcasing skills—it's about demonstrating initiative, adaptability, and resilience amidst the ambiguity and unpredictability of the professional world. And these qualities aren't developed overnight or through a brief project; they're cultivated over sustained periods of hands-on experience. Yet, the demand for internships far outweighs the supply. We need to do a better job at making internships a part of degree programs, not just a mandatory checkbox, but a mandatory provision, facilitated by the university and accredited. This approach would level the playing field, enabling learners from diverse backgrounds to send a powerful signal to potential employers and truly stand out. #internships #softskillsforall

Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. The presentation shed light on the struggles faced by students who encounter barriers in securing paid internships, often having to compromise their preferred work settings. https://lnkd.in/eXzNKMXt
