Design became art in 1951 when the Museum of Modern Art in New York displayed the Cisitalia. Reflecting on the moment he was escorted into the enormous designers' section, Battista "Pinin" Farina recalled, “I walked around the car, and it was a long walk around my own life. I felt as if I was walking through a dream, but people do not tell their dreams willingly nowadays. The Cisitalia was defined as a moving, running sculpture.” A couple of decades later, the Cisitalia became the first automobile to enter the permanent collection of any art museum in the world, thanks to #Pininfarina's donation of a model that was sent to the The Museum of Modern Art. That's how an icon was born.
Hands down the best art show I ever saw was Ralph Lauren's Speed Style and Beauty display at the Boston MFA. To this day I've never seen it's equal. Talk about inspirational.
The Cisitalia 202 represents the archetype of the Italian "granturismo".
