Necessity is the mother of invention, even when-- or perhaps especially when deploying #AI For its launch back in 2021, the Fairprice Online logistics team had an ambitious target for VersaFleet: optimise 15,000 deliveries a day with fully automated planning — no human-in-the-loop 🤖 More than 100x larger than the problem-sets used to benchmark VRP solver performance, this was not only challenging algorithmically (np-hard), but in software engineering terms as well 🤯 On each extreme, we could either multi-thread and autoscale our DevOps stack to handle high concurrent loads; or map, reduce & partition every problem-set into smaller, more manageable chunks The latter was ruled out because with every partition, solutions produced would more unlikely be globally optimal. Yet given the budget constraints of the contract value (#SaaS 🙈), neither could we throw unlimited compute & memory instances at it — even as a ‘VIP’ #AWS client 😅 We mobilised every last drop of software engineering and operations research talent within our team, and I personally guided an architectural design that incorporated a novel hierarchical approach It took hours of calibration and parameter-tuning together with the Fairprice Online logistics team, even after months of research & development — happy to report that 2 years later, it’s still a well-oiled machine! 💪 A marvellous breakthrough in #OperationsResearch and one of our finest achievements that has exponentially propelled our #TMS product suite 🎉 Kudos to the pioneering NTUC FairPrice Online team for challenging even what we thought was impossible 🙏 #FairpriceOnline x #VRP = #VersaFleet

Since all orders must be fulfilled within a 2-hour time slot, the operations team needs to plan, pick, and sort in less than an hour before the driver arrives for the next time slot.
