Interesting to see the RESP consultation published yesterday. My initial reaction was of déjà vu back to the RIIO-ED2 DSO/DNO model debates! 🤔 Perhaps no surprise that RESPs would take a role modelling supply and demand, enabling consistency of assumptions, and providing a whole system assessment of energy needs across their region. I’ll be interested to see the detail of how they might set projections “against network conditions” to show where network capacity is needed or where there is headroom, and how this interfaces with the DSO load-related expenditure planning. Removing some uncertainty for DNOs may help accelerate delivery of the infrastructure we need, particularly with respect to strategic investment, but if you want a DNO to be accountable for safety, reliability, and connecting things, they will want/need a “final” say in what network needs to get built, and how much they can manage via flexibility. Or will the NESO and RESPs be accountable for keeping the lights on?? 💡 Given the potential nuances here, it’s great to see the ambition for “the NESO’s regional strategic planning capability to be established by late 2025, allowing time for the initial RESP outputs to be delivered and input into the setting of the RIIO-ED3 price control.” ⏰ The clock is ticking - what do you see the key debates being in gaining alignment? Demand for electricity is on the rise in the United States following two decades of relatively flat electricity use — and yet, building more transmission lines to bring new sources of energy online is a slow, bureaucratic process. This tension is pushing the power sector to rethink how it builds and uses the power grid itself. This comprehensive report explores how advanced grid solutions can enhance our existing transmission and distribution systems, paving the way for more modern energy infrastructure. Key findings reveal that by deploying advanced grid solutions like DERMS, ADMS, smart reclosers, and topology optimization, we can not only enhance grid reliability and resilience but also generate an estimated $5 to 35 billion in transmission and distribution infrastructure costs over the next five years for consumers through strategic implementation of these solutions.
