Registration for the Young Scientist Presentations and Poster Sessions at the 2024 Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) is ending soon ⏰ In line with its mission to nurture the next generation of scientific talents, GYSS provides a platform for select participants to showcase their work through the Young Scientist Presentations. A true test of one’s science communication skills, each participant has 15 minutes to discuss their research findings and next steps with an audience of award-winning scientists, renowned technologists and fellow GYSS delegates. But wait, there’s more ⬇️ Nominated participants are also invited to enter their posters for the on-site exhibit at the National University of Singapore (NUS). During Phase 0 of the #HellasQCI project, researchers explored the integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems into Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks in urban areas. They set up a real-world #FTTH network in Athens, studying the deployment phases and demonstrating #QKD links.   During these studies, two publications were produced: optimized coexistence in C-band through photon noise reduction & O-band QKD system coexistence. Photonics in Africa: Paving the Path to Innovation and Sustainability Optics and Photonics education is crucial for the African continent's future. As the world advances towards light-based and smart technologies, bridging this gap is essential to keep pace with global innovations. Currently, Africa lags in this field, with only a few countries, such as South Africa, having significant photonics education and research programs. However, there is hope and progress. Photonics Ghana dedicated to advancing optics education in Africa, has recently established a Photonics Engineering program at Sunyani Technical University with support from the University of Eastern Finland. Through outreach activities, Photonics Ghana engages students in both secondary and tertiary institutions with practical demonstrations of photonics applications using photonics kits. More recently, Photonics outreach activities by the KNUST Photonics Club, supported by Photonics Ghana members George Dwapanyin, PhD, MInstP and funded by renowned photonics organization Optica are commendable. These efforts mark a significant step forward in empowering the continent with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the era of light technology. However, more needs to be done in leveraging photonics-based technologies to address critical societal challenges. For example, implementing photonics solutions to tackle the plastics waste problem plaguing the African continent is crucial. 🧑🔬🧑💻MEET OUR TEAM 🎉👇 🤝Fehmi Mustafa Dikbas is a #biomedicalengineering master's student at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Previously, he obtained his bachelor's degree from Yildiz Technical University, Turkey, in the #mechatronicsengineering major. He joined the CELLOIDS project for his master's thesis, where he will develop a new control algorithm to locomote the ultrasoft magnetic microrobots in porous media by applying magnetic fields.   The idea of being part of developing new medical methods to overcome the biggest challenges that the complexity of the human body creates excites him and forms his future research aspects🔬🤖 #microrobotics #research #job #science #biorobotics #team #celloids #welcome #meettheteam

Industry Sessions at OSC 2024 congress have been tailored in order to convince young people that they will be able to earn their living within this community. Recently, i just learned that some institutes do make sort of much more long term strategy: We have been in discussion with THz specialists from Frankfurt, New-Delhi and Vilnius at the Institute of Physics at Frankfurt University. Suddenly, the discussion was interrupted since one participant observed that the inner courtyard (which is the usual mixture of grey energy with some grass) was used by kids to play catch. And, we were surprised to learn from our host, that this is pretty usual and promoted by the institutes for natural sciences and that they do co-operate with local schools. Reason: Number of students is decreasing year by year and the concept of "early socialization" is one that really brings results. Physics and its people become part of dayly life. I'm quite happy to share that our work titled ‘Anomalous Long-Distance Coherence in Critically Driven Cavity Magnonics’ has been published in PRL https://lnkd.in/e7SqjQau 😀 ! In this work, we demonstrate how critically driven cavities can overcome decoherence limitations and establish nonlocal coherence via strong coupling between a cavity and a magnetic sphere over a two-meter separation. We revealed two novel anomalies: the coupling strength oscillates twice the period of conventional photon-mediated couplings; clear mode splitting is observed within the cavity linewidth. Our Letter highlights the potential of using critical phenomena to enhance long-distance coherence in quantum networks.
