#ECB2024 in Rotterdam has been a great success! “It’s been a pleasure to speak at the #ECB2024, where researchers and industry experts come together to explore how biotechnology is applied in innovative ways to address our world’s biggest challenges, namely health, food safety, and climate change. While sharing PHOTANOL's story about how our platform technology makes use of cyanobacteria as cell factories for CO₂-based chemicals, I also got the opportunity to take a deep-dive into other interesting topics such as novel genetic toolbox strategies and the pros and cons of several interesting chassis organisms. What I particularly like about the conference is that it bridges the gap between research and industry: the number of parallel sessions covering academic discoveries and industry applications is really well-balanced, which results in valuable knowledge exchange, interesting discussions, and new insights. It confirms again that to make real change happen, it is key that researchers and industry experts collaborate on sustainable solutions. That's why we at PHOTANOL collaborate with different industry partners to help transform their processes to circular, using our platform technology.” Aniek van der Woude | R&D Manager Strain Development #biotechnology #innovation #circularity #rotterdam #collaboration #sustainability #circularity #circularchemicals #sustainablesolutions

"Our world is built on biology and once we begin to understand it, it then becomes a technology": this inspirational sentence is painted on the wall of our lab and perfectly reflects our belief as well as it is the foundation of the world of biosolution. Biosolutions that use enzymes, microorganisms and bacteria are inspired by nature and are key elements for a biobased circular economy, covering sectors ranging from construction to textiles, from food to energy production. McKinsey & Company estimates that 60% of global raw materials can be obtained through biosolutions and it is therefore clear how for the circular bioeconomy can represent an extraordinary lever for innovation. The Bioeconomy Report, by Intesa Sanpaolo, SPRING - Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster and Assobiotec, published some days ago, says that in 2023 the activities connected to the bioeconomy in Italy generated 437.5 billion euros, 9.3 billion more than in 2022, provinding jobs for around two million people. As Vicepresident of Assobiotec, the industrial association of Federchimica for the development of biotechnologies, and member of European Biosolutions Coalition, I can say that we look with confidence at the renewed interest in the biotech sector from politicians. The European Commission's Manifesto, released last March, identifies the biotechnology and the biosolutions as one of the most promising areas of this century, part of the solution for the green transition and many current and future challenges of our society. Definitely an encouraging perspective, that we need to implement with concrete actions. A new regulation of biosolutions, a quicker access to them in Europe can represent two important first steps in this direction. If you would like to take a look at the report, here you can find the text and the presentation by Intesa Sanpaolo (the texts are in italian). https://lnkd.in/dBPvAuGD Stefania Trenti, Intesa Sanpaolo Catia Bastioli, SPRING - Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster Mario Bonaccorso, SPRING - Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster Michele de Pascale, Sindaco di Ravenna Annagiulia Randi, Assessora Comune di Ravenna Marica Nobile, PhD, Assobiotec Michelle Tagliavento, Assobiotec

We’re proud to be featured in 5th anniversary edition of The Mills Fabrica Impact Report 🎉 Innovation always begins with a question. Our Co-Founder first asked: what if biology and microorganisms could transform the way materials are made, for the better? But true progress comes from asking the right questions—not just seeking quick solutions. The Mills Fabrica has been a constant supporter of our curiosity since the earliest days of Modern Synthesis, when our technology was still in its infancy. Fast-forward five years, and we’re recognised as an established player within a thriving ecosystem of innovators driving planet-positive change. In her featured interview, Jen Keane speaks to how our journey has been fuelled by curiosity—about nature, how we make decisions about the products we use every day, and how we can reshape production systems for a more sustainable world. Curious to read the full conversation? Check out page 49 of the report here: https://lnkd.in/emF5SZUf #SustainableInnovation #Biotechnology #Biomaterials #Impact #Curiosity
