ASK the prospect what they need to proceed RIGHT NOW. Tell the prospective employer exactly what you need to take the job RIGHT NOW. Tell your team member exactly what they need to do to get that promotion NOW. When we just say it straight we save ourselves and the person on the other line a LOT of time.

I performed a magic trick during the interview for my first corporate job. That was over ten years ago. But I was asked just 2 months ago From a former colleague, if it was true. It was. I landed an interview with Red Bull. An absolute dream job. Being responsible for all F&B outlets, In the city I lived in. I was nervous as hell, But prepared. Arrived an hour early, spent it sweating under my blazer. It was all going well, I felt very comfortable. But I wanted to make:  A lasting impression I had an ace up my sleeve. Not really, more like: A deck of cards in my inner pocket Literally. In my mid-20s,  I was obsessed with magic. I had a deck of cards,  always at arm’s reach. Don't get it twisted.  I was good. And finally, the question I was waiting for: “what do you do in your free time?” I answered: “I love to cook, play football and magic.” He gave me a very confused look, And said: “Magic?” In my head, I said:  “oh, you're not ready for what's about to hit you.” BOOM! I performed, and it was magic (pun intended) Even the assistant was called, To witness one of my tricks. I got the job. Which started my corporate career. Worked there for over 8 years. I still say WE, when talking about the company. The impression lasts to this day. 10 years later. No recommendation. No wisdom. No lesson. Just wanted to share a story.

There is a difference between positional authority and personal authority. Personal authority is the ability to informally influence. This is done through one’s ability to build relationships and influence others through personal attributes and qualities. Positional authority provides access to resources and people to make a significant impact to the business. Which in turn, provides those with high degree of personal authority to grow their impact. Ok, so apparently it’s my turn to write the dreaded “I was laid off” post… In the excitement of Clari acquiring Groove, my entire team was let go. I wish Clari all the segment-dominating-success in the world, but it’s time for me to focus on where I am going to dedicate my time, energy and skills from here. Not sure this is the right forum for me to talk about my accolades or “super powers” - as we like to say in the Saas world - but the last two people who recommended me for a position used the term “powerhouse” to describe my impact. I was unexpectedly flattered to hear them describe me in this way. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it’s exactly how I want to show up in my work; bold, relentless, confident - and unapologeticly so. The truth of it is, I like to win and I’m insanely competitive. Maybe not the best traits in my everyday life (sorry hubby), but when it comes to sales, they’ve served me well. So as you can imagine, for someone like me - for someone like most of us sales folks - getting laid off was a huge blow to the ol’ ego. But wow, what an incredible opportunity for growth and reflection. I have worked for some of the greatest female leaders I’ve ever known (looking at you Holly Procter) and they constantly remind me of what is possible. That it is in the dark moments that we better know ourselves, and it’s in the struggle where the most growth happens. So im taking this as an opportunity… To spend some more time with my children. To deeply evaluate where my next role will be. And to regain my strength so I can utterly dominate for my next company. The DM’s are open and so am I. If your organization is like most that we've met hiring is driven by HR. They do a great job hiring for non sales roles. If they where great at #hiring and #onboarding sales people then more than 33% of sales people would meet or exceed #salesquotas year in and year out. The problem is this: As long as the top 36% of #salespeople hit or exceed the goal then that is enough to carry the 64% that are failing. What is hard to measure is the cost to the organization for tolerating that failure. Often times I'm told that under performing sales people, #turnover for invalidated salespeople is a '2 comma problem. You want to fix the problem?

Have you ever had a filthy job? One that made you cringe. One that made you sick. I once had a summer job working for my Dad 12 hours a day 6 days a week in a dusty warehouse. Part of the job entailed breaking down cardboard boxes for the recycle trash bins. One day, while wrestling with some unruly boxes, I felt a thick cold slimy substance slide down my fingers and dangle in the air like a yo-yo string. YUCK. It was someone's snot. I thought to myself, "Why me, Lord? What did I do to deserve this filthy job?" BUT The truth is, things could have been worse. We must work with all of our heart, even if the job is miserable. We are not working for human masters. We are here to serve Christ. We will receive our reward from the Lord. The attached picture has been something I have thought about since my first boss said it to me my 3rd week into my career, almost a decade ago. It has and always will be true. Here is A True story: At my last company, I told this to one of our new hires, and he got so offended that I didn’t want to hear about problems, only solutions, that he stopped showing up for work and we had to let him go. He had many excuses without many results. Unfortunately, not everyone is cut out for the lifestyle, but if you are you’ll reap the rewards.
