I hung this Dollar Tree find on the entry door of our 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom temporary living facility (TLF) where my family of 5 is living for 6 weeks after returning from an overseas (OCONUS) assignment. For those unfamiliar, TLF is like a government quality extended stay hotel. We’re attempting to find #normalcy in the transition. I’m exploring areas to serve (again) since gainful employment seems unlikely in this season (again). Because here’s the reality. We’re likely moving again. And again after that. 4 moves in 5 years. This is the heavy burden of reality for many #militaryfamilies just like ours. This is part of the #qualityoflife conversation happening in Congress under the leadership of Don Bacon, because families often feel unseen and unheard when it comes to concerns about #militarylife. There are many parts of military service that we love, and we are here for the long haul. But that doesn’t mean we love *every part* of this lifestyle. So, we do our best. We hang the decor on the door of TLF. We create normal for our families as quickly as possible, and we attempt to feel stable for as long as possible.

West Chevy Chase Heights/Westboro is located in the eastern region of Bethesda, MD. This neighborhood is made up of small and medium single-family homes and apartment buildings, ranging from 1-4 bedrooms. The median sale price of a home in this area is around $1,127,067. As opposed to some of the other neighborhoods in Bethesda, MD, West Chevy Chase Heights/Westboro boasts residential properties that are a mixture of owner and renter occupied. The real estate is established, built mainly between 1940 and 1999. The unique features of this area make it a great choice for military personnel, families with school-aged children, and professional executives. West Chevy Chase Heights/Westboro is home to the National Institutes of Health and Naval Support Activity, so it makes plenty of sense that there is a greater number of active-duty military in this neighborhood than 99% of all other US areas. This neighborhood also boasts several parks and outdoor spaces, like the Columbia Country Club, North Chevy Chase Park, and Lynnbrook Park. This neighborhood also borders Bethesda/Chevy Chase High School, a highly regarded Montgomery County Public School. The commute to work for residents in West Chevy Chase Heights/Westboro likely depends on the person, 28% of residents opt to work from home, 5.5% prefer biking to work, and 11% commute by train. In 2022, 33,000 veterans experienced homelessness across the United States, with nearly 500 in New Jersey alone. Homelessness amongst veterans remains an ongoing challenge nationwide, and we hope that the American Legion Redevelopment Plan can help to alleviate this issue, no matter how modest the impact may be. 🇺🇸 The Plan, a partnership with American Legion Inc Martin Wallberg Post No 3, received unanimous approval from the Town of Westfield Council last week. Drafted by Topology, the Plan calls for the creation of a new facility for the #AmericanLegion to provide services, host events, and attract a new generation of members. Crucially, the facility will also create 15-25 units of housing for homeless and disabled veterans. This approval showcases an exciting application of the redevelopment process to create partnerships with community organizations and help them continue to thrive. Urge your Congressional Representatives and Senators to pass the bipartisan Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE Act), a crucial piece of legislation that recognizes the therapeutic benefits of outdoor recreation for military veterans like me. While time outside is not a cure all, routine time outside raises the floor of mental health and shines a light on important doorways and paths one can take towards long term healing. In other words, it was, if you read my post yesterday, what allowed me to walk away from someone else's war I had been fighting longer after than I ever did in person.
