Our Philabundance Community Kitchen students recently visited the Carversville Farm Foundation. As we toured this beautiful farm, we learned about livestock, tasted fresh organic vegetables, and gained insights into the farm-to-table process. This hands-on experience is crucial in enriching our students' culinary education. It was an incredible educational experience! Thank you for allowing us to tour and learn more about your mission!
Kansas 4-H has options for any interest, and K-Stater James DeRouchey didn't hold back in trying as many as he could: "Throughout my 12-year 4-H membership, I participated in the swine, sheep, beef, foods and nutrition, photography, horticulture, leadership, and buymanship projects. I participated in 4-H Club Days presentations and the Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes contests. I am currently a sophomore at Kansas State with a major in Ag Business and minors in Animal Science and Personal Financial Planning. I plan to obtain my Master's degree at K-State and my career goal is to manage finances for an Ag operation. Among the most important things I gained from being involved in 4-H was to develop the ability to communicate and talk comfortably in front of large crowds. Public speaking is something that I feel 4-H has helped me grow through project talks, speaking with judges, and sharing/teaching others about my projects." Meat science is a pivotal point in animal science for us to ensure wholesome products, however it is the most neglected aspect of animal science in developing countries.. what can we do to change the narratives?
Meat science wasn't originally on the radar for animal science researcher Kelly Vierck. But now she jokes that it's her job to figure out why steaks taste good or bad. Kelly's research program focuses on the flavor palatability of beef products, which also includes studying the effects of retail display conditions on meat quality. Her findings have the potential to improve the consumer eating experience and help reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of meat products. "That's something that I really enjoy," she said. "It's the combination of that research and education actually impacting producers and students down the line." Our mission covers everything from chickens, goats, dairy, and cattle, to even organic crops.
