Reference intervals (RIs) are used across many medical disciplines, allowing physicians to quickly pinpoint potentially pathological test results. Intervals vary between populations and individuals, but so far, personalized RIs are cumbersome to obtain. Researchers from the BioRef consortium of the University Hospitals of Bern (Inselspital) and Lausanne (CHUV) as well as from the University Children's Hospital Zurich and Swiss Paraplegic Research have established a multicentric IT framework in collaboration with Tune Insight and SPHN to obtain patient group-specific RIs from routine laboratory data. This infrastructure, BioRef TI4Health, is the first of its kind featuring a federated network where patient data remains at each participating hospital, yet allowing a joint evaluation in real-time, secured by homomorphic encryption. This enables clinical physicians and researchers to interactively define precise RIs in a privacy-preserving and reproducible manner, streamlining compliance and promoting a vital part of precision medicine while offering a maximum of patient privacy protection. I'm happy to share that my capstone project, "Analysis of Intraoperative Blood Pressure Time Series and Extraction of Features Predictive of 30-Day Mortality," which we have submitted as a Podium Abstract has been accepted for presentation at the AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) 2024 Annual Symposium! This research focuses on analyzing intraoperative blood pressure (BP) time series data to identify features associated with 30-day postoperative mortality. We utilized change point detection (CPD) with Pruned Exact Linear Time (PELT) and L1 regularization to pinpoint transitions in BP data, examining how intraoperative hypotension, hypertension, and BP variability influence outcomes. The study aims to extract and compare time series features of mean arterial pressure (MAP) linked to increased mortality risk, providing insights for enhancing perioperative patient care. In late January 2023, the new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which requires researchers to share data that were generated with NIH support, went into effect.1 New proposals and competitive renewals for research grants must now include a DMS Plan that describes the data expected to be generated, associated metadata, timelines related to data preservation and access, and factors affecting distribution and reuse, as well as oversight arrangements and budgets for allowable costs.

And colleagues from RRD will join the conference to present their work and discuss with others in the field of citizen science. On Monday, Kira Oberschmidt will showcase her framework for active involvement in participatory eHealth research. This framework was developed (in the Pharaon project) and evaluated in practice, and can help others shape the participation of stakeholders in their research. In one of the solution rooms of Monday, Eline te Braake and Marian Hurmuz will search for a solution for the challenges we face when moving towards citizen science (as part of the RE-SAMPLE project). Participants can join the solution room to discuss their point of view and share their experiences with each other. On Tuesday, we will present two posters. One about our journey in the REIS (Reuma en Ik- Self-management) project. In this project, Ria Wolkorte (University of Twente), Rita Schriemer and Yasmin Schriemer (Sint Maartenskliniek), Eline te Braake and Christiane Grünloh (RRD) work together with patient representatives towards providing an overview of what self-management strategies people with a rheumatic condition apply. The other poster is about a citizen science and experience sampling study. This study is a collaboration between Ria Wolkorte and Lieke Heesink (University of Twente), Christiane Grünloh (RRD) and representatives of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The focus is on investigating the associations over time between stress, pain, sleep, rest, physical and cognitive activities with fatigue. Are you joining CS4H and interested in these topics?
